The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons – Season 1 Episode 4 Recap & Review

Hayato’s Happiness

Episode 4 of The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons begins with Hayato heading off to his high school reunion and asking the boys to be on their best behavior while he’s gone. Hayato meets with his friends Miyamoto, Miyan, and Yuzuki. They gossip about a classmate named Sekiguchi, who happens to be a company president for a prestigious company now. Several girls flock over to Hayato and ask him about his educational occupation. Hayato is perplexed by everyone’s relationship progress and planned trips.

Hayato opens up about his life with his brothers admits it’s tough and explains the ups and downs of it all. His tangent causes the others to leave for a while. While wandering the reunion’s location, he overhears the girls belittling him in the women’s restroom. Hayato leaves the reunion party and tells Miyan who won’t be attending the after-party. He wanders the streets, baffled by the girls’ remarks for calling him an old aunt figure.

Saki drives by and offers to take Hayato out for drinks before he heads home. She comforts Hayato about his dilemma and tells him he should embrace his status. Hayato opens up about his mother and father. He says his father pursued writing as an unknown novelist, requiring his mother to work part-time to pick up the slack. Fortunately, his father’s books started selling, allowing them to afford a better home and meals. This occurred as soon as Minato and Mikoto were born.

After acknowledging their new living arrangements to his brothers one day, his mother tells him that she wishes she could’ve given Hayato a similar life. Hayato touches upon this point with Saki a lot. He tells Saki this motivated him to do his best to do what his mother wanted to do for them after she and his father passed away. Despite moving Saki with his goals, Hayato admits he’s not a fan of the life he lives after hearing his former classmates out.

He wishes he could grow up and live a life similar to theirs. Saki tells Hayato it’s normal for him to think that way and shares her grievances with life to provide Hayato with solace. Hayato thanks Saki for the advice and for taking him out for drinks. He enters his home and Mikoto, Minato, and Gakuto surprise him with a birthday party. They present him with hand-written massage coupons, a new apron, and a delicious birthday cake. Hayato reflects on Saki’s advice about enjoying life’s lovely moments.

The episode closes with Minato telling Hayato to use those massage coupons soon since they’ll expire.

The Episode Review

The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons continues to surprise audiences with its relatable themes and compelling characters. As I predicted in the previous episode’s coverage, this chapter solely focuses on Hayato. It shows him attending a high-school reunion party and learning about the new lives his former classmates lived. He ends up comparing his busy life with theirs, resulting in him feeling bad for himself.

Thankfully, Saki provided him with encouraging words to reflect on. Many viewers will appreciate the themes touched upon in this chapter and the mini hurdle Hayato had to overcome within it. A lot of audience members watching this series probably have families or plans to start one with their lover. They’ll find Hayato’s opinions about his caregiving role relatable and touching.

While it’s great to forge a bond with children, some sacrifices need to be made. This episode compellingly addresses those problems, giving Hayato depth and reasons for viewers to foster a connection with his character.

On top of giving viewers a new perspective on their mother’s caregiving role, this was a relaxing and insightful episode to watch. Hopefully, future episodes continue to deliver genuine scenarios like the ones it has presented to fans so far.
