Where is the Juarez Ripper now? | The unsolved murders of women in Mexico

Ciudad Juárez, Mexico

What did the Juarez Ripper do?

The Juárez Ripper is an unknown serial killer and rapist who is believed to have committed multiple murders against women in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, as far back as 1993.

The first victim attributed to the Ripper killings was Alma Farel, who had been beaten, raped and strangled in the Campestre Virreyes district on the 23rd of January 1993.

By the end of 1993, 16 more women were found murdered under similar circumstances. The media dubbed the killer “The Juárez Ripper” due to the nature of the murders. In 1994, 8 more women were murdered in Ciudad Juárez.

Did the police have any suspects or leads?

In 1995, 29 more women were murdered. Police finally had a suspect: An Egyptian chemist named Abdul Latif Sharif, who had been arrested on unrelated rape charges and convicted for 1 murder. However, the murders continued after his incarceration for many years to come. The police tried to pin the murders on gangs, but this wasn’t successful.

A common theory is that the killer chose Ciudad Juárez specifically as a place to commit the murders because of its high activity of organised crime.
