What were Jolly Joseph’s crimes?

The six murders from the Koodathayi Cyanide Killings were all linked to the Thomas-Shaju family. Almost 5 years following the sixth and final murder, Jolly Joseph was revealed to be the mastermind behind the deaths. Netflix’s documentary, Curry & Cyanide revolves around the life and crimes of Jolly Joseph, the prime accused in the case who was confronted by her oldest son – Remo Roy.

Jolly Joseph is accused of having killed her mother-in-law, father-in-law, husband, husband’s maternal uncle, as well as the wife and daughter of her husband’s paternal cousin. The six murders linked to Jolly Joseph had gone unnoticed until Jolly’s son, Remo, confronted her about the murders.

Who is Renji Thomas?

Sister of Roy Thomas, Jolly’s late husband Renji reveals how Jolly’s lies were things that she wishes her family had caught on to years ago. Renji reveals how following the unsuspecting death of her mother, Annamma Thomas, at the hands of Jolly, she sensed something different in the air. Renji reveals how Jolly had tried to embody her late mother.

Another revelation from Renji also reveals Jolly’s green wherein the accused had told Renji that she would not get any share in the Thomas family property other than the jewellery that had been passed down to Renji from Annamma. Renji reveals that she had suspected Jolly’s greed first when Roy had brought in a fake power of attorney to take ownership of their father’s assets following his death.

Years later, after Jolly’s second marriage, Renji reveals to have gone through her late brother Roy’s autopsy reports.

She uncovers the time of Roy’s death as revealed by Jolly did not match the autopsy reports which gave her the reason to suspect that Jolly had poisoned Roy as well as the other family members that died unnaturally.

Where is Jolly Joseph’s sister-in-law Renji now?

Renji reveals that it was Jolly’s son, Remo, who called her to let her know that Jolly had confessed to all her crimes. She recalls being worried about the fact that Jolly could have more cyanide lying around in the house. Renji asks Remo to hide himself and his younger brother, Reynoly, in their bedroom.

She rushed to take the two boys home the following day after Jolly was taken into custody. A few years after Jolly’s arrest, Renji visited Jolly in prison, asking her to stop contacting Remo, who was trying to move on with his life.

Renji calls Jolly a wolf in sheep’s clothing and reveals details about her last interaction with the serial killer saying:

“The present situation is hard for your sons, (Remo and Reynold Roy) anyway. As long as I am alive, I won’t allow them to suffer anymore. They are my children now. I am going to raise them as if they are my own.”

Renji recalls asking Jolly about her crimes and reveals how Jolly claims that the crimes “just happened”. Meanwhile Jolly and her accomplice, M. S. Mathew are in remand at the district prison in Kozhikode – Kerala, India.
