What did Mark Zuckerberg do?

Mark Zuckerberg is an American businessman and philanthropist who co-founded the social media service Facebook in 2004. He has faced a lot of criticism over the years for how Facebook uses people’s data. There have been many Senate hearings and investigations but Zuckerberg has never been charged with anything. 

Here’s a look at some of the scandals he’s faced: 


The 2016 U.S. Presidential Election

Zuckerberg faced a backlash for the misinformation surrounding the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, with the revelation that false news stories were outperforming real news. Zuckerberg apologised in a post on Facebook and claimed the company plans to improve its practices. 

Further to this, in 2020, Facebook announced it wouldn’t fact check politician’s ads on its platforms.


Cambridge Analytica scandal

2018 saw the birth of the Cambridge Analytica scandal when it was revealed that the data-analytics firm improperly harvested data from tens of millions of Facebook users for ad targeting during the 2016 election.

In 2019, the FTC fined Facebook $5 billion over violations of user privacy. This was a record-breaking fine for a tech company.


Antitrust hearing

Zuckerberg appeared in a congressional antitrust hearing in July 2020 alongside the CEOs of Amazon, Apple and Google. Lawmakers concluded that all the companies are monopolies and should be regulated.


Who was Frances Haugen? 

Frances Haugen was a former Facebook employee who became a whistleblower when she shared internal documents with the Wall Street Journal in 2021. She later testified that Facebook put profits over people’s safety. 


Where is Mark Zuckerberg now?

Mark Zuckerberg is worth $165 billion and is celebrating Facebook’s 20th anniversary in 2024. He is now worth more than Bill Gates, who founded Microsoft. He is 39 years old now and is married with 3 children. 

David Fincher directed the 2010 film about Mark Zuckerberg’s rise to fame titled The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield. 

Zuckerberg: King of the Metaverse was a documentary about the billionaire released on Sky in 2024.
