Where is Larry Hall now? | The suspected serial killer featured in “Black Bird”

Larry Hall

What did Larry Hall do?

Larry Hall is an American murderer who authorities suspect could also be a serial killer. He is alleged to have abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered several girls and women.

The discovery of a 15-year-old’s body in November 1993 led the police to Larry Hall’s door. He was convicted of her murder and later confessed to it along with another murder. However, he later recanted both confessions.

Since his imprisonment, Hall has confessed to more than 35 brutal murders, but like with the other 2 murders, he changed his mind and recanted the confessions. Police believe he could be responsible for the murders of as many as 50 women. This would give him the horrific status of being one of the most prolific serial killers in American history.

What happened in prison?

In 1998, the FBI enlisted the help of a Chicago businessman called James Keene, who was serving a 10-year prison sentence on drug charges. They were aware of Keene’s ability to charm people with his affable personality, so they offered to commute his sentence if he agreed to a transfer to the same maximum security prison Hall was in to befriend him and get him to reveal the locations of the bodies of the women he killed, as they feared Hall could win an appeal against his conviction.

Keene agreed to the undercover operation, and Hall confessed that he had killed one of the victims and showed him a map he was working on with red dots which represented the whereabouts of his victims. Keene was released from his sentence but the map was never recovered. However, Hall’s appeal was denied and he remains in prison.

Apple TV+ released an original drama series in 2022 called Black Bird which was based on James Keene’s book about his experiences with Larry Hall in prison, titled In with the Devil: a Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption. It ran for 6 episodes and starred Taron Edgerton as Keene and Paul Walter Hauser as Hall.
