What happened to Amy Carlson? | The ‘Love Has Won’ religious cult leader

Amy Carlson

What happened to Amy Carlson?

Amy Carlson was an American religious leader and the co-founder of the religious movement ‘Love Has Won.’ Carlson’s mummified body was found in religious cult’s compound in Crestone, Colorado, in April 2021.

Carlson was known by her followers as Mother God, and they believed that she was a 19-billion-year-old being, and a reincarnation of Jesus Christ. They also thought she could heal people of cancer with the power of love.

In September 2020, rumours began circulating that Carlson was in poor health and was paralyzed from the waist down. Carlson had opened up about her health and stated publicly that she had cancer. In the weeks before her death, the police were called a number of times to carry out wellness checks on her. Every time the police turned up at the compound, members of the religious cult claimed she wasn’t there. Carlson was last seen alive by a non cult member on the 10th of April 2021.

When was Carlson’s body discovered?

Upon Carlson’s request, the cult travelled to Ashland, Oregon and stayed in Callahan’s Mountain Lodge, Ashland, Oregon. While there, it is claimed Carlson lost all motor control and had to be carried around. Carlson had requested to be taken to the hospital, but was refused. She died in the room at Callahan’s Mountain Lodge on an unknown date soon after the move.

The cult moved Carlson’s body a few days after her death to the Mount Hood National Forest when the hotel staff became suspicious. Her body was driven back to a man called Miguel Lamboy’s home in Crestone, Colorado.

Lamboy discovered the body on the 27th of April 2021, and reported it to the police the following day. The mummified corpse of Carlson was discovered in a sleeping bag wrapped in Christmas lights with her face covered in glitter and her eyes missing in a makeshift shrine in the home. It was suggested she had been dead for several weeks.

What happened to the cult members?

The 7 members of the cult were charged with abuse of a corpse as well as child abuse due to the presence of 2 children at the property. Carlson weighed just 75 pounds when she died.

An autopsy report released in December 2021 stated that Carlson died from “global decline in the setting of alcohol abuse, anorexia, and chronic colloidal silver ingestion.” The autopsy found no evidence of Carlson suffering from cancer.

The Deputy District Attorney tried to upgrade the abuse of a corpse charges to a more serious charge of tampering with a deceased human body. The group members were facing charges of child abuse, abuse of a corpse, tampering with deceased human remains and false imprisonment. However, all charges were later dropped.

Carlson was the focus of the HBO documentary Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God, released in 2023.
