Episode 6
Three Little Birds, written and directed by Lenny Henry, follows the journey of three Jamaican women migrating to London for a better life. However, upon reaching London, they face the harsh realities of racism and sexism, turning their lives upside down and making them question their decision to move to London in the first palace.
At the start of the sixth episode, three goons enter Mrs. Biswas’s apartment and hold Hosanna hostage. When Aston returns home, they demand money from him, which, if not fulfilled, would result in Hosanna getting hurt.
Aston informs them he has already paid off the loan, but the goon insists the loan is not over until they say so. They search the house and find some money in Leah’s closet, taking it. Moreover, they also break Aston’s finger before leaving.
What happens to the relationship between Shelton and Leah?
Although Shelton has accepted Leah and her children, Leah feels insecure. She worries that leaving her husband will have a drastic effect on her children. Thus, Leah starts ignoring Shelton, but the latter is determined and wants to be with Leah no matter what because he believes Leah’s husband does not deserve her.
When Shelton learns about the humiliation Leah and others face in a white church, he promises them to help rebuild their church. Leah does not respond to his efforts, but this does not deter Shelton. He does everything he can to win Leah over and even promises to help Leah financially after learning that the goons have stolen all she had saved for her children.
As the story unfolds, Leah’s children unexpectedly arrive in London, confusing everyone. It is revealed that Leah’s husband brought them with him. The man also promises not to cause trouble and apologizes for his past actions. Leah and her husband reconcile, leaving her relationship with Shelton unresolved. Both have feelings for each other, but neither is willing to express them, fearing it would only bring them misery.
How do Aston and Hosanna get married?
Hosanna is angry with Aston for hiding the fact that he had a child with his ex-girlfriend, feeling betrayed. Aston assures her that he has moved on and has no feelings for his ex-girlfriend, but Hosanna doubts him and believes he might still have feelings for his ex-girlfriend and can go back to her.
Meanwhile, Leah takes Hosanna to her father, whom Hosanna is also angry with for abandoning her and her siblings after their mother’s death. Her father explains that he doesn’t care if Hosanna forgives him or not, but she shouldn’t call off her marriage just because Aston has a daughter. He warns that if Hosanna keeps Aston’s daughter away from him, the girl will grow up without the father, akin to Hosanna.
Touched by her father’s words, Hosanna agrees to the marriage and even takes Aston to see his ex-girlfriend. However, they face resistance at the ex-girlfriend’s home, as Aston is blocked from entering the house by her ex’s father, who objects to a black man entering his home.
How does Three Little Birds end?
The ex-girlfriend’s mother intervenes, rebuking her husband, and assures Aston that he can see his daughter. Impressed by Hosanna’s gestures, Aston is moved, and with their friends as witnesses, they get married, promising to support each other through thick and thin.
As the series nears its end, Chantrelle and Jimmy, the man who previously flirted with her, enter into a relationship. As for Leah, she decides to leave for Jamaica with her husband, feeling sad for Shelton but having no other choice.
The Episode Review
This series falls short of expectations, mirroring its lacklustre tone. It disappoints on multiple fronts, with one of its biggest flaws being its shallow character development. The characters lack emotional depth, making it challenging for us to connect with them.
Additionally, subpar acting further detracts from the overall experience and distances us from the characters. This series is best avoided, as it offers little more than a waste of time.
