Episode 5
Episode 5 opens with Leah and Chantrelle enjoying their time in Mrs. Biswas’ small apartment. Chantrelle is relieved to be away from Mr. Wantage and is learning new skills like sewing to keep herself afloat. Hosanna enters the room with the exciting news that she has obtained four passes for the local zoo, and they all must come.
The girls are thrilled about the outing and get ready for a fun day at the zoo. Hosanna tells Aston that he has to come along as well. But as the bus is about to leave, Aston refuses to go and tells Hosanna that he has important work to do. Hosanna tries to convince him, but he doesn’t listen and leaves. When everyone has left,
Aston buys the wedding gown for Hosanna from the money he has obtained from a money lender. On his way to work, the money lender sees Aston and stops him, demanding repayment. Aston explains that it’s only been two days since he borrowed the money and asks for more time. The money lender insists on taking something valuable if Aston can’t pay, meaning the car.
Aston is hesitant to offer his car, even though it would pay off all his loans because it holds sentimental value. This car was bought with the first love of Aston’s life. In a flashback, we see that the money lender is actually the father of Aston’s ex-girlfriend. The reason he humiliates Aston in the club is that he is still angry that his daughter chose to date a black man. Despite their breakup long ago, the money lender still harbors envy towards Aston.
Aston, with a heavy heart, has to let go of his car. Meanwhile, all three girls are at the zoo, enjoying themselves. Leah is trying to convince Shelton, who is still angry but not ignoring her. To make Leah jealous, Shelton brings along another girl.
At the same time, a guy hits on Chantrelle. In an attempt to impress her, he trespasses into an announcement booth falsely announces that there is a tiger on the loose, and advises everyone to head to the bar for safety. This causes a great panic, and everyone starts running towards the bar.
Everyone is having a great time at the bar. Shelton finally confesses his love for Leah and expresses that he has no issue with her being married; he sees it as a mistake and is willing to accept her along with her children. Meanwhile, Chantrelle is enjoying herself with the guy she met earlier. As it starts raining, they end up spending the entire day at the bar.
When they return home, Aston is already there, waiting for them. He gifts Hosanna the wedding gown and explains that he had to give up his car to repay the loan. Hosanna is thrilled but somewhat blames herself.
Aston assures her that he will work hard to buy a better car and that nothing is more important to him than Hosanna’s happiness. He also shares the story of his ex-girlfriend and how he was mistreated because of his race. Leah is moved by Aston’s story, and the episode ends on an emotional note.
The Episode Review
In this episode, not much happened to move the main story forward, but it did resolve some conflicts, especially between Shelton and Leah. Some felt their conflict could have been explored more deeply. The episode also showed Chantrelle becoming more confident in her choices regarding men.
Overall, the episode was slow-paced, and some might even claim that if half of it had been cut, the impact would have been the same. With the series coming to an end, there’s a sense that things might end happily, as everything screams a happy ending, but there’s also a feeling that there could be a surprising twist in the climax.
