The Sign (Thai Bl) – Episode 5 Recap & Review

Is Chalothon The Main Antagonist And The Supernatural Naga That Is After Phaya?

Episode 5 of The Sign starts with the Special Units Team getting ready to nab Narong. Inspector Akk gives the orders and assigns tasks to each. Yai, Tharn, and Phaya are to check Narong’s house near the airport and look for a cellar. Phaya is still angry with Tharn, and Yai asks him to set things right since it is impossible to work together when they are angry at each other.

Tharn goes after Phaya and tries to make him listen, but Phaya is too angry. Tharn tells Phaya that he never told Chalothon about his dreams, but since there is no explanation for how Chalothon knows about his dreams, Phaya does not trust Tharn. He holds that Tharn betrayed him.

Yai, Phaya, and Tharn arrive at Narong’s house and find enough evidence, including photos and masks, to confirm that he is their suspect. Yai wonders why Narong went after the people he killed while they were not connected to her sister’s death, and Phaya thinks that it is a sign of someone who used to be a victim retaliating against the law.

Yai informs the office, and they get ready to collect the evidence when two people in black hoods attack them. They chase after them but only manage to catch one while the other runs away. To everyone’s surprise, they arrest the forensic officer on their team, Wit.

Elsewhere, Khem and Thongthai bring in Songyod and hold him to be safe. The man is rude and arrogant, talking about the team not working to catch whoever is after him but looking after him like “guard dogs.” Thongthai reminds him of why Narong is after him, but his lawyer quickly says that Songyod is innocent.

The fact that they must protect him makes the team, including Akk and Singh, angry. On the way out, Tharn bumps into Songyod and sees a vision of him getting into an accident. Outside, the press is waiting to question Songyod, and his arrogance knows no bounds. The protestors attack him for claiming to be an innocent man.

Upon investigating Wit, Singh finds out that Wit and Narong’s sister were in a relationship, and he probably might be working with Narong and is the mole in the unit. Wit does not say anything during questioning, and Phaya thinks he is probably waiting for Narong to finish the job.

Songyod thinks he is safe in his car and instructs the driver to take him to the safe house and call some agent to send him girls to help him kill time. Suddenly, he hears knocking at the car’s boot and upon checking, he sees his driver tied up at the back. The person driving stopped the car and knocked out Songyod.

Back at the precinct, an officer informs Inspector Akk about a car matching the description of Narong’s car parked outside the unit. Suddenly, they receive a notification on their phone. It is a photo of Narong with Songyod knocked out in the backseat. Phaya goes into the interrogation room to question Wit. Wit is angry because the police could neither protect Rin nor make the person who led to her death pay for his crimes. He says he had to get his hands dirty and do what the police failed to, and Songyod deserves what happens to him, and the people protesting outside agree with them.

The unit runs against time to find any evidence that can help them arrest Narong and save his last victim. While Narong is torturing Songyod, the special investigations unit suits up to look for Narong and stop. Khem tries to voice his resentment for having to save a rapist, but Akk reminds him that they are the police and their job is to stop criminals regardless of how noble their motive may seem.

Narong wants to take his time torturing Songyod to death and streams the “punishment from hell” online for the world to see as a warning to those who wish to step on the powerless. Akk sees the video and calls Narong, trying to reason with him. However, Narong is ready for the punishment that follows his actions and is willing to sacrifice himself for the victims, like his sister.

Tharn and Phaya find the cellar after hearing sounds coming from the underground around the old house in the woods. Phaya tells Narong to allow them to take in Songyod and let the law take care of him. Narong hears none of it since he believes the law is for those who are poor without power and money. In so many cases, his sisters get sealed, and the culprits escape without punishment, start new lives, and live happily while the victims suffer and even take their own lives.

Tharn asks Narong to keep Songyod from arriving and let him face punishment. Otherwise, killing him will make Songyod the victim and Narong the criminal, but Narong has nothing left to lose. A gunfight ensues, and then an armfight between Phaya and Narong. Tharn takes the time to help Songyod.

Phaya loses his charm necklace during the fight but manages to knock out Narong. However, Narong suddenly becomes more powerful, as if possessed with something. Phaya is at a disadvantage since Narong becomes not only powerful but seems to have kinetic superpowers since he knocks Tharn just by a wave of his hand. Narong tries to stab Phaya, but Tharn steps in and is stabbed instead and then uses his charm bracelet to repel Narong away . He knocks him out, and Yai arrives.

After Tharn’s wound is dressed, Phaya pulls him aside to discuss the supernatural aspects of the case. He says that the green eyes that Narong suddenly turned to are similar to what he sees in his dreams and what Tharn saw when he saved Phaya from drowning. Tharn says he does not remember how he saved them from Narong, but he knew instinctually that the charm would help them, and then everything else happened miraculously.

Phaya acknowledges that Tharn is always there to help him when he is in danger, and he feels appreciated. He says he never wants to feel like he did when Tharn was stabbed and promises to always listen to Tharn. About Chalothon knowing about his dreams, Phaya says he cares about no one else but Tharn. Phaya makes Tharn promise never to leave him.

During interrogation, Narong says he does not remember what happened in the cellar. About why no fingerprints were found on the scene, Narong is seen burning his fingers on a hot kettle to get rid of prints. Narong confronts Akk and the team, holding them responsible for her sister’s death and the despair of the defenseless victims who cannot find justice because of their status as poor and without power. The police are like heroes to these victims, but they let criminals like Songyod go unpunished, leaving the victims with scars that cannot heal.

Yai comes into the room with an update that they arrested Songyod after Khem and Thongthai found video evidence of him sexually assaulting girls. Like Akk says, justice can be delayed, but it finally happens in the end. Unfortunately, the time is up for Narong’s sister. In her suicide video, Rin apologises to her brother, saying that she cannot go on living. She says that even though her brother had promised her justice, the law gave her death instead.

Thongthai is especially emotional after watching the video, agreeing with Narong’s sentiment that the police are also to blame for Rin’s death. Akk scolds the team members who feel helpless, saying he does not want officers who easily give up justice. They might not be able to help everyone at first try, but it does not mean they cannot make it happen. The team has renewed vigor to work even harder to find justice. Later, Tharn calls Singh aside and asks for a favour. He needs him to find information about his father’s case.

Phaya sleeps over at Tharn’s place again, but Tharn does not protest this time. They try to think about what happened in the cellar after Narong’s eyes turn green, but they cannot find anything since Narong blacked out after the eye change and remembers nothing. Tharn helps dress Phaya’s wounds, and an image of Tharn blowing on them sends Phaya’s heart racing and his mind wandering with intimate images of what his feelings want to do on the couch.

After Tharn goes to bed, Chalothon comes knocking on the door. Phaya stops him from entering the door, and when he touches Chalothon, he reacts in pain, and his eyes turn green, but he soon composes himself. Phaya pulls Chalothon aside and, in the pretense of confidentiality of the cases they work on, asks Chalothon to stop seeing Tharn often. Back in his car, Chalothon checks the wound on his shoulder, and a burnt handprint is seen where Phaya touched him. He vows not to let Phaya take Tharn away from him.

The next morning, the Abbot calls to check on Tharn, and while on call, Phaya gets a message from her sister saying that their grandmother is sick, and Phaya leaves to check on her. At the end of the call, the Abbot warns Tharn to make sure that Chalothon and Phaya do not get into a fight.

Meanwhile, Phaya arrives home and realises that his sister tricked him to get home. His grandmother is sulking since he rarely goes home after he starts working. Phaya tries to cheer up the grandmother but fails. Later, he dreams of the girl, and this time, he clearly realises that she and Tharn might be the same person before a creature with wings appears in the dream at the end of the episode.

The Episode Review

The team’s first case ends on an emotional note with lessons on the aftermath of justice delayed for poor and powerless victims. As Narong says, while the criminals start over and live happily, the victims are left with scars so deep that they can barely move on. Regardless, Akk reminds viewers that justice delayed is not always justice denied as long the law enforcers never give up. The big revelation of this episode is that Chalothon might be the big, bad dragon naga and the main antagonist in the drama. He wants Tharn and is not about to give him up to Phaya.

The Abbot might be aware of the whole plot (not fair, lol), but we have to agonise through the episodes to watch it uncover bits by bits since he is religiously bound not to interfere. However, it continues to be a thrilling watch episode after episode as we slowly peel the layers off the big supernatural mystery while chasing criminals and finding justice for the victims.
