The Owl House – Season 3 Episode 3 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Watching and Dreaming

Does The Collector capture Luz?

In The Owl House Season 3 Episode 3, The Collector captures Luz, her mom, and her friends.

Luz, Eda, and King all have terrible dreams at the hands of the Collector. Eventually, Luz realizes that the friends who are throwing insults at her are being controlled by The Collector. They are able to break free for a moment, and Amity helps Luz wake up with a light spell.

When Luz wakes up, she finds Eda and King, and awakens them with light glyphs as well. They all hug, glad to be reunited at last.

The Collector isn’t happy, however. When they reveal to Belos, still disguised as Raine, that King is a Titan whose dad’s heart still beats, Belos has an idea. He tells The Collector that if they play with Luz, Eda, and King in person, they’ll realize how much fun they are.

Why is The Collector making everyone into puppets?

The Collector rushes off to play games with them, but after several attempts realizes that their efforts aren’t endearing them to Luz, Eda, or King. They start to cry, so Luz takes pity and tries to talk to them.

The Collector confesses that all they wanted was a friend. But friends have always betrayed them, like their own siblings. The Archivists sent The Collector to the Demon Realm, where they bonded with the Titan children. But the Archivists saw the Titans as threats and wiped them out. King’s father thought The Collector was the culprit and trapped them. Now that they’re free, they just want to be friends with King.

Luz tells The Collector that they all know what it feels like to be lonely or misunderstood. So she decides to show The Collector how the three of them became friends.

Does Belos make it to the Titan’s heart?

Belos makes his way to the Titan’s beating heart on one of the Collector’s blue stars, but is slowed by Raine fighting to get their body back. Raine nearly stops him, but can’t slow him enough. Belos separates from Raine’s body. He reaches the heart, and his body melds into it and grows stronger. The slime from his body then spreads across the land, quickly contaminating The Boiling Isles.

Does The Collector defeat Belos?

Luz, Eda, and King show The Collector all the places they’ve made memories together, including the place where Eda taught Luz how to use the Titan’s magic. The Collector wonders if Luz forced the Titan into being her friend like they did with King. But Luz tells them that friendship isn’t about control, but rather kindness and forgiveness.

Suddenly they are interrupted by the Titan awakening. It’s Belos. The Collector tries to stop Belos from destroying everything by extending him kindness and forgiveness–but, surprise, it’s not that simple. Luz protects them from Belos’ blue fire, which swallows her and turns her into a little ball of light.

The Collector snaps their fingers to bring Luz back. When she doesn’t return, the permanence of death for mortals finally occurs to them. Unable to control herself, Eda transforms into the Owlbeast to attack Belos.

Are Luz and King’s dad alive?

Luz’s light travels to the In Between Realm and transforms back into her body before falling into a pool. The arms of a Titan grab onto her, pulling her out. Luz wakes up, realizing she’s face to face with King’s dad.

He tells her that she’s not yet dead, just as his own heart still beats. He’s been watching over King and taking note of her kindness to his son. Before Belos kills him completely, he transfers his powers to her, informing her she’ll only have them momentarily. He then whispers a message to her for his son before Belos’ corruption takes him.

Does Luz defeat Belos?

Luz returns to the Demon Realm to help in the fight against Belos. But when the Archive House starts to collapse, The Collector rushes to save those within it. There, Amity has been able to break herself, Willow, Hunter, and Gus free from their puppet forms. They then freed Lilith and Camila and other puppets.

Luz realizes they need to stop Belos’ magic from his heart. She, Eda, and King get closer to Belos, where they find and rescue Raine. Luz is eventually able to pull Belos from the Titan’s heart, separating them and ending his control over the Boiling Isles.

The slime of Belos forms into Phillip Wittebane, who pleads for Luz’s mercy. When that doesn’t work, he insists that the two of them, as humans, are better than these witches. But she won’t hear it. She walks away while Eda, King, and Raine trample him to death.

The Titan’s magic then leaves Luz, who whispers his message to King: “I loaf you.” They all laugh together at the bread pun.

After the battle, people reunite with loved ones. The Collector decides to return home and try to do some growing up. Before they leave, King gives them his bunny Francois. Everyone is happy and at peace, but it does sadden Luz that the Titan’s magic is gone, now that he’s died.

Does Luz stay in the Boiling Isles?

Four years later at Camila’s house, Luz packs for college at the University of Wild Magic. She can’t wait to see all her friends, even though she just saw them last week. She’s been able to travel between the human and the demon realm through a portal made by the Collector.

Vee tells Owlbert it’s time to get the others. The palisman flies through the portal to the Demon Realm to prepare Luz’s friends for her coming.

Willow is a flyer derby player, Hunter carves palismans for the Bat Queen, Lilith does architect work with Hooty, Amity has continued her Abomination magic, Raine works on a project to remove coven sigils, and Eda runs the University of Wild Magic where Gus also works.

With King organizing, everyone gathers to surprise Luz for her “King-ceañera,” since she never got to celebrate her quinceañera on her 15th birthday.

How does The Owl House Season 3 end?

During the celebration, King shows Luz how his power has been growing. He sketches a different kind of light glyph from his father’s magic and creates a ball of light. Soon, Luz will have a completely new set of glyphs to learn in order to harness the magic of the Boiling Isles.

At the end of the episode, everyone gathers to watch a shooting star display put on by The Collector. Luz thanks Eda and King–for everything.

The Episode Review

As heartwarming as this finale is, it isn’t the end The Owl House deserved, being one of the most imaginative, thrilling, and compassionate children’s shows Disney has ever made.

Ultimately, the fantasy adventure resolves too quickly. The Collector deserved more time devoted to their character growth; Eda and King were ignored as major characters so the condensed storyline could focus more on Luz; and the threat of Belos’ rule felt greatly diminished.

Fortunately, writers were able to resolve Luz’s complicated feelings about Belos in a satisfying way. And the show sets up an intriguing contrast between the two, highlighting what makes one good and the other evil. Belos essentially colonized the place, made everyone conform to his standards, and destroyed the language of the Boiling Isles. But Luz let the Boiling Isles speak to her, learned its language, let the uniqueness of the culture and its individuals flourish and her own individuality along with it.

In the end, The Owl House never loses the aspects that made it so special in the first place. With a dynamic and lovable protagonist in Luz, the children’s fantasy says a bittersweet goodbye to a story of love, acceptance, and embracing the weird in ourselves. I’ll still be crossing my fingers for that spinoff.
