The Fire Hunter – Season 2 Episode 8 Recap & Review

Heavenly Beast

Episode 8 of The Fire Hunter Season 2 starts with Roroku trying to convince Yuoshichi not to kill Kira. Despite Kira being his daughter, Yuoshichi’s set on murdering her. Hibari tries to stop Yuoshichi but Yuoshichi counters his attack and belittles him. Yuoshichi grabs Kira’s hand and takes her toward Kunugi’s corpse.

Koushi tries stopping Yuoshichi but Yuoshichi shoves him aside. Before he moves forward, Yuoshichi’s wife, Hibana, arrives and confronts him. When Yuoshichi refuses to abandon his desire to murder Kira, he and Hibana clash. Suddenly, the two hear Kira’s voice, resulting in Yuoshichi and Hibana ripping each other’s arms off and falling into the divine palace’s waterfall.

Touko notices this sight and informs Akira. Akira spots several Spider corpses inside Kunugi’s body. Touko informs Akira that Kunugi planned to make a burial for the Spiders. While exploring, Kun notices his father and calls out to him. Kun’s father is surprised Kun survived. The two discuss several topics regarding Kun’s alliances with humans and the Spiders’ promises toward humanity.

Kun’s father tells Akira that as long as she wields the gods’ weapons, she’ll suffer the same fate as them. Before Kun’s father perishes, he tells Kun to go with the humans and for Akira to reclaim the fire for herself. Akira and the others reach the divine palace and spot Hibari beside Kira. They learn from a treefolk that the Flickering Flame has successfully transformed Kira into her vessel.

Meanwhile, Koushi heads to Roroku’s side. Although Koushi tries to keep Roroku alive, Roroku dies. Then, we cut to Touko, who finds herself in the same space satellite again like in a prior chapter. She and the Flickering Flame discuss Earth’s previous disasters, humanity’s relation to the gods, and Kira.

Touko returns to Earth and notices everyone’s crowding around Roroku. Kanata comforts Touko because she’s upset that he died. Meanwhile, Kun grabs Yuoshichi and Hinabi’s rings and puts them on his fingers. Suddenly, thunderstorms start occurring in the area, to all our cast’s surprise. Akira looks into the sky and notices the Millenial Comet’s approaching Earth.

Akira advises the others to take shelter. Kun notices Touko’s standing around and not moving. Suddenly, a whirlpool surrounds Touko and Kanata. While the thunderstorms destroy pieces of the divine palace, a fallbeast appears in front of Touko and Kanata. The episode closes with the fallbeast staring at Touko and Kanata.

The Episode Review

Yuoshichi’s war path has come to an end in ways many viewers weren’t expecting. Fortunately, for the gods, they can live another day. While some folks won’t feel too heartbroken about their deaths, it’s unfortunate that Roroku perished. However, we can expect Koushi to look after Mizore for him. This could be Koushi’s way of honoring his fisherman-turned-fire-hunter buddy.

As for Touko, it’ll be interesting to see how things will go between her and the fallbeast. Based on the preview, it appears she may be engaging in some type of physical altercation with the creature. Although Touko’s fought some flame fiends before, this fallbeast looks more threatening and powerful compared to those foes.

Additionally, this fallbeast could be one of The Fire Hunter’s more sentient creatures. Essentially, one that’s capable of speaking with humans like the treefolk. Only time will tell if that’s the case though. Overall, this was an okay chapter of The Fire Hunter. It had some tense moments and intriguing segments that’ll keep fans hooked. I’m interested to see how this series will wrap up.
