The Bloody Hundredth (2024) Movie Review – Basically a DVD extra for Masters of the Air

Basically a DVD extra for Masters of the Air

Remember back in the golden day of DVDs where we used to get little extras accompanying the main feature? Well, apparently AppleTV fondly remembers that golden age too because its latest hour-long film is basically a DVD extra to accompany its current flagship program, Masters of the Air.

The film documents the real-life plight and struggles of the American pilots involved in the battle for air supremacy in World War II and beyond… and that’s about it. The film is pretty straightforward in its depictions and it definitely feels like a companion piece to Masters of the Air rather than a stand-alone doc you’d put on with an in-depth analysis into the strategies and tactics during that time.

For those unaware, the 100th Bomb Group, nicknamed “The Bloody Hundredth,” suffered high casualties in the war, hence the name of this documentary. The real meat of this film though comes from the stories told from the airmen who experienced camaraderie, loss, and, eventually, victory while fighting fascism and Nazi forces.

Seeing the real faces behind the men portrayed in the show is the big highlight of this one. The film is also narrated by Tom Hanks and with plenty of talking head interviews and archival photos, the film will be a treat for fans of the show. For those looking for something with a bit more depth, akin to a accompanying documentary like the TV movie, We Stand Alone Together for Band of Brothers, you’re unlikely to find that here.

Still, The Bloody Hundredth is a decent watch and it doesn’t outstay its welcome at an hour long. If you’re looking for more Masters of the Air content to whet your appetite, you can’t go wrong with this one.
