The Big Door Prize – Season 2 Episode 4 Recap & Review

Storytellers

Episode 4 of The Big Door Prize season 2 starts with Mr Johnson in the past with the Morpho machine. Walter introduces himself to Ian, a newcomer in town here to do some repairs. There’s obvious chemistry between them, especially when Ian flirts a little.

This is reflective of Walter’s mood in the present, as Beau encourages him to head inside. The pair talk, with Walter deciding to close the store for a while and also give Jacob some time off. Beau teams up with Walter and they do a project together. When they do, Jacob shows up at Giorgio’s and flirts a little with his girlfriend. However, Trina believes it’s a bit much and encourages him to leave and go play at the arcade instead.

Meanwhile, Nat has concerns about Hana and believes that she’s keeping secrets. Speaking of which, Dusty arrives and believes they’re talking about his date with Alice. He overshares about the hug and things are rather awkward, especially when Cass looks frazzled over this revelation. Hana shows up ready for the book club, and Nat puts on her fake persona, laughing away at the cheapest jokes.

Things are made all the more awkward when Dusty shows up with drinks and once more mentions the hug. Cass’s short fuse is definitely getting shorter and in the end, he leaves.

With Duty scuttling off, the group turn their attention on Hana. Hana points out she doesn’t have any friends and she’s never connected with anyone. Apparently she’s had blue dots for as long as she can remember too, and she points out she wants to be part of something, like the weird book group, and her opening up is enough for Cass wanting to give her a hug. Hana hurriedly says no, and it also allows Nat to soften a bit too.

As for Mr Johnson, we see more of his past with Ian. It turns out he found the Theremin on the back of his truck and Ian handed it over. This starts their little romance, as Walter gets them a microwave dinner together… but there’s a problem. He doesn’t show up that night and all these plans are thrown out the window.

Speaking of plans, Jacob finds a new friend in Trev. The pair have a quick bromance and Trina is taken aback when they show at Giorgio’s. He turns her down, and Trina is not happy that the consequences of her actions come back to bite her.

While Cass and Dusty have a chat about the hug that night, clearing the air and talking about their desires, Mr Johnson heads back to the Morpho machine and places his card inside. This goes back to the dinner date, where a whole bunch of excuses are cycled through with one question – would you like to know which one it is? Regardless, Walter decides to confront his past and stop blaming himself for what happened with Ian. And as he comes to this realization, his blue dots miraculously disappear.

The Episode Review

Sometimes life throws a curveball your way and you can either roll with the punches or let life beat you down. This episode captures that beautifully across the different storylines and Walter’s in particular is the focus here. He’s been blaming himself for the failed date and in the end, he just needed to accept that it’s not his fault.

As for the other characters, it’s ironic that both Trina and Cass are finding the consequences of their actions coming back to bite them. They both wanted more freedom and in the end, they’ve desired what they had even more. It’s clear that Trev is going to be a bad influence on Jacob, and that storyline is simmering under the surface now. At the same time, we have Cass who isn’t happy about Dusty dating Alice.

Although Dusty bringing this up and rubbing it in her face isn’t exactly a good look either in all honesty. Either way, The Big Door Prize continues to deliver enticing drama and we’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
