What Happened In Episode 23?

In The Apothecary Diaries Season 1 Episode 23, Maomao confronts Lakan. She offers to play him in a best three-out-five type of game. If Maomao wins, Lakan must buy out one of the older courtesans. If Lakan wins, Maomao must live with him after her contract expires. Maomao adds two rules to the game. The winner of each match must choose a poisoned beverage for the loser to drink.

As for the second rule, Maomao and Lakan cannot leave the game for any reason, otherwise, they’ll lose. Maomao loses rounds one and two and drinks several poisoned cups. Lakan purposefully loses the third round because he doesn’t want Maomao to drink more poison. Lakan drinks the cup and collapses. Maomao ensures Jinshi that the poison in the drinks is alcohol.

Additionally, she wants Gaoshun and Jinshi to take Lakan to the brothel so he can select a flower. Then, we cut to a flashback, which delves into Lakan’s past life experiences. We learn he had a rough relationship with his father and a great one with his uncle.

During his adult years, Lakan inherits his family’s military regime, filling him with glee. One day, he visits the Verdigris House and encounters Fengxian (who’d later become Maomao’s mother). He and Fengxian develop a friendly and competitive relationship over Go and Chess. During one of their games, the two get intimate with each other. Three months pass, and something terrible happens to Lakan’s uncle.

Also, Lakan’s father orders him to study abroad. Not wanting to anger his father, Lakan complies and tells Fengxian that he’ll be away for three months. Unfortunately for Lakan, he ends up returning in three years and learns about Fengxian’s cruel fate at the Verdigris House. Lakan succumbs to much grief and sorrow because of the ordeal.

Then, he wakes up in the present and Meimei greets him. Meimei presents Lakan with a beverage and he finds the taste revolting. Meimei tells Lakan Maomao made it for him and Lakan changes his views of the drink. Then, Meimei gives Lakan a withered rose gift Maomao left for him. We cut to Maomao riding in a carriage. She takes out a rose bud from her cloak and the episode closes with her looking at it.
