The Abyss (2023) Ending Explained – Why is the city of Kiruna Panicking?

The Abyss Plot Summary

The Abyss is a Swedish disaster thriller movie featuring Tova Novotny as Frigga, Edvin Ryding as Simon, Peter Franzen as Tage, Kardo Razzazi as Dabir, Felicia Truedsson as Mica, and Tintin Poggats Sarri as Aila. The story revolves around Frigga, the head of security for mining operations in Kiruna, Sweden, known as “The Womb of Sweden.”

Frigga, a no-nonsense woman going through a divorce, must balance her personal struggles with her responsibilities to her job and the people of Kiruna.

What is happening in Kiruna?

The Abyss begins with mining scenes in Kiruna, Sweden, and a news anchor reporting on a significant rock burst measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale. The anchor also mentions that the city experiences over 100 unpredictable shocks annually. The scene then shifts to a group of kids partying in the Kiruna Rift Zone. When one of them ventures into a restricted area to urinate, two friends follow to stop him. However, a series of tremors occur, and two friends fall into a crack in the Earth.

Frigga, the head of security for mining operations, is shown at the peak of Luossavaara mountain, where she discusses seismic activity with her colleague Erica. It is revealed to be Simon’s birthday, Frigga’s son, prompting her to reflect on past birthdays. Frigga later picks up her boyfriend, Dabir, from the train station, and during the ride home, he reveals that he has been offered a job by the Kiruna fire chief.

On their way home, Frigga and Dabir encounter protesters rallying to save Ottavas, a local cafe. In a heated exchange, Frigga nearly hits a protester, who turns out to be her daughter, Mica. Tension is calmed down by Aila’s grandmother, and Frigga eventually heads home with Dabir. As for Aila, she is Mica’s girlfriend.

Where does Simon go?

While Dabir and Frigga are spending time together at her house, Tage, Frigga’s husband, unexpectedly shows up and is visibly upset. Mica also arrives and is upset with Frigga for bringing Dabir home on Simon’s birthday. When they go to wish Simon, they find him missing along with his PS5. Frigga is upset with Tage because it was his week to take care of the kids.

Frigga receives a call from the mine, and we learn that Tage is the head of operations there. Dabir drops Frigga and Tage at the mine and leaves for the fire station. Before Dabir drives away, Tage threatens Dabir for being with Frigga. Frigga, Tage, Eric, and another man go down to the mines to inspect the safety situation while Mica looks for Simon.

As Frigga investigates further, some stones fall on her. She appears unharmed, but they discover a large cavity in the wall. When Tage asks why the cavity wasn’t discovered earlier, Frigga explains that there has been no mining in that part for the last 40 years. Realizing the cavity is close to Kiruna, Frigga decides to evacuate everyone from the area.

What happens at the mines?

Aila discovers Mica’s car and texts her about it. Meanwhile, a small boy named Anton, playing in the sandbox, starts sinking into the sand, but Aila manages to save him. As Frigga and her team are exiting the mine, a cave-in occurs, forcing them to seek refuge in the rescue chamber. Mica, on the other hand, finds Oliver in her car instead of Simon and becomes upset when she discovers empty alcohol containers in the car.

On his way to respond to the call from the daycare, Dabir sees Mica hitting Oliver and intervenes. They learn that Simon and his friends went to the rift zone to party. As they prepare to leave for the rift zone, Mica notices a wedding ring with Dabir. At the mines, everyone is in the rescue chamber. When they come out, they find all the exits blocked by rocks.

As they reach the rescue ladders, they discover the way is also blocked. They create a small route by removing a rock that requires crawling through. Tage is scared, but Frigga convinces him to go first, followed by the rest. Tage gets stuck and panics, but Frigga gives him an iron rod to hold onto. Tage passes out, and Frigga manages to pull him out.

Meanwhile, Mica and Dabir search for Simon and find some phones in a crevice, but none of them belong to Simon. Patrick comes out, but Erica tragically does not survive. Frigga and the others come out of the mine and alert everyone, including Mica, who then goes to save Aila and her grandmother with Dabir. Frigga and Tage also arrive at the scene.

Why is the city of Kiruna panicking?

The city is in a state of panic as evacuation alarms blare. When Mica, Aila, and her grandmother get into the car, the road cracks, and the car begins to sink. Dabir arrives to rescue them, but Mica gets stuck. They eventually manage to escape the car. As they emerge, they witness the collapse of the mine tower, and the city begins to crumble around them.

They start running, but Alia cannot keep up. They make their way to the hospital in New Kiruna, where there are many casualties are being treated. Frigga finds a friend of Simon among the injured. She explains that they planned to play Call of Duty for the last time in the school computer lab. Meanwhile, Tage attacks Dabir in the church after taking Frigga’s ring from him.

How does The Abyss end?

They all go to the school to rescue Simon. Upon reaching the computer room, they discover that the floor has collapsed, and they find Simon sitting in the corner of the cavity on the floor. Frigga descends to rescue him but accidentally injures herself when an iron rod gets stuck in her leg. Mica finds more water pipes and slides down to help Frigga and Simon. She ties a belt around Frigga’s thigh to reduce bleeding.

They successfully remove the rod from Frigga’s leg and pull Simon up. While Mica and Frigga are waiting, the floor crumbles further, and they have to jump onto a hanging container. Tage holds a wire to stop the container from falling but is electrocuted to death. Frigga survives the ordeal.

In the final scene, firefighters arrive and remove Tage’s body while attending to others. Dabir is seen looking at the ring he intended to give Frigga.
