Siren Season 2 Episode 2 Recap & Review

Tensions In The Group

After the big reveal at the end of last week’s episode, Siren returns for a much more dramatic slice of mermaid action as things begin slotting into place for the conflict ahead. As the new group of mermaids begin venturing out on their own, tensions brew between various human groups, promising to explode in dramatic fashion later on down the line.

The episode begins with Ryn and the group of mermaids deliberating over their future. It turns out the oil ship is doing 8 months worth of work and that proves to be a big problem for the mermaids as the sonic blasts will continue for all that time. As their health begins rapidly deteriorating, Ryn, Maddie, Helen and Sam work together and come up with a plan to try and integrate the group on land while protecting their need to go in the water.

Most of this plan involves a large amount of money so Helen goes to visit Sam’s dad, demanding he turn over the inheritance funds. Understandably suspicious, he reluctantly agrees but a later development in this subplot does look set to pose a particular problem going forward.

The wildcard of the season so far has been Xander and it’a clear he may well be the deciding factor in whether things blow up later on down the line. Between sleeping with Nicole and trying to take a loan out, he erupts into anger upon learning one of the mermaids in the new group was responsible for killing his dad. Sam manages to calm him down for now but this may prove to be a very important fact going forward.

Dotted around this drama are various little subplots, both good and bad. The questionable inclusion of Ryn learning to drive and the odd bites of uplifting music are odd stylistic choices. On the other hand, Maddie’s tense relationship with her Mum and Sam seeking a support group with help in dealing with the Siren Song are certainly welcome inclusions.

There’s an awful lot going on here and the episode ends with a challenge for Ryn’s leadership. One of the group looks set to splinter things from here on out and if I had to wager a guess, I’d imagine this will boil down to the group going up against one another, possibly with the humans intervening and killing one of them. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Xander stirring the pot too but for now we’ll have to wait for next week’s episode to see what happens.

A decent episode this one and for fans of Siren, seeing all these little subplots and plot developments play out make it well worth sticking with. The ending of the episode will likely leave a lot of people waiting eagerly for next week’s episode but if things continue to develop the way they are, we could be in for quite the rollercoaster ride.
