Shangri-La Frontier – Season 1 Episode 20 Recap & Review

Episode 20

Katzo and Sunraku stare shocked at Psyger-0 after she kills Pencilgon. None of them know what to do, so they awkwardly grab the items on the ground. Suddenly, Psyger-0 musters the courage to ask what is Sunraku and Pencilgon’s relationship. Before leaving, she’s glad to know they are only gaming buddies.

Sunraku picks up Pencilgon’s creepy sword and goes to Thirdrema. Emul is lying on her bed with the pillow on her head when he finds her. She gets so happy to see him that she jumps in his face and starts crying. After the player thanks and gives her back the necklace, she does that again.

On the same night, a car arrives at Utopia Entertainment Software, the developer of Shangri-La Frontier. Chief Tsukiyogi enters the company, complaining the defeat of Wethermon is stopping him from appreciating his wife’s cooking. According to him, the expected defeat order starts with Ctarnidd, with the samurai coming only at the middle, maybe even the end.

When an employee says that Tsukuri and Amachi are there too, he searches quickly for stomach medicine in his pockets. Even though he looks calm and collected, he gets extremely distressed when he sees he doesn’t have any with him.

Amachi is already incredibly angry, but she has to go through many recognition methods to enter a room, like ID, fingerprints, and more, which makes her furious. When she enters, Tsuki is waiting for her, also angry. They didn’t expect anyone to use Reward Scales there to defeat Wethermon so soon.

When Amachi says they can’t complain about the result, Tsukuri protests that Amachi was the one who decided to Nerfe the unique monster. If that hadn’t happened, Wethermon wouldn’t have been defeated. However, the other girl affirms no one would’ve succeded if they didn’t do that.

As they fight without any sign of stopping, we learn Tsukuri is the one responsible for the lore, while Amachi balances the game to make everything work. Tsukiyogi tries to make them calm down, but he ends up getting repeatedly hit in his stomach.

Meanwhile, Rei happily thinks about how Sunraku asked her for help and gave her presents (although the items on the floor weren’t actually presents).

Sunraku logs in again and wakes up to see Emul is still crying about his win. Vash gets happy to hear Wethermon departed the world satisfied and says he’s ready to give the player another mission. He asks Hizutome if he wants to know the truth of the world, to which the boy excitedly answers yes. However, before he’ll have to find a few items in an unknown area.

After that, Sunraku proudly shows Emul he’s a level 78 player and starts seeing his loot from the battle against Wethermon. The first one is a book telling the unique monster’s story, which doesn’t interest the boy all that much.

Unexpectedly, the second item is the Clear Sky Skillbook, which means the player can learn Wethermon’s skills. He gets so excited seeing that he almost goes crazy. As he needs Divinity equipment to use, it might take a while, but it’s still something incredible.

The last is an accessory that looks like a bracelet, the Inventoria Key. It acts as a warehouse with infinite storage and only demands some to transport things into the space. When he puts it on, he disappears, scaring Emul. To his surprise, the place is filled with robotic monsters and armor.

Meanwhile, Pencilgon is delivering flowers to Setsuna’s grave. As far as she was concerned, the one she met was the original and she was very happy about that. She reveals she intended to stop playing Shangri-La Frontier after defeating Wethermon. However, as Setsuna told them to uncover the truth of the world, she couldn’t stay still.

The Episode Review

After so many action-heavy episodes, it’s nice to get a more peaceful one to calm our nerves. Like some of Shangri-La Frontier’s best episodes, this one focuses on the comedy. It also introduces us to some new characters, who are the ones responsible for the game. They are pretty funny and, as they have a different dynamic from the rest of the cast, it’ll be a good change of pace to see them occasionally.

Rei’s interactions with Sunraku are always funny, so it was great to see her trying to understand his relationship with Pencilgon. But the best part is her misunderstanding everything that happened after Wethermon’s battle, and thinking he gave her presents. People seeing signs where there aren’t any is a great comedic relief.

Also, maybe the show will change gears a bit now. Pencilgon wants to uncover the truth because of Setsuna, and Sunraku’s unique scenario has connections to it too. Wethermon’s lore has some interesting stuff, so it might be a nice addition to the show. That also probably means they will try even harder to beat the other unique monsters, as there’s no way they aren’t related to the Divinity.
