Shangri-La Frontier – Season 1 Episode 18 Recap & Review

Episode 18

Wethermon realizes Sunraku is reviving himself and says that it won’t fall until the player surpasses its ultimate technique. Then, the samurai starts Clear Sky Conquest again. It starts an unending chain of attacks, but Sunraku is more used to it than before.

He notices it takes about 30 seconds before Sky Clear hits him. The go-to strategy is probably to preserve your stamina and stay about three meters away from Wethermon. Once the monster hits him again, he uses another Rebirth Tearjewel. The samurai repeats his speech from before and begins Clear Sky Conquest again. Sunraku realizes that surviving the attack is a more likely winning condition.

Now, he only has 5 resurrection items. To win against his opponent, he must parry the attack with the timing of a critical while you can’t make any stance adjustments. He is sure that soon he’ll have everything he needs to do that and stop the unique monster.

Meanwhile, Pencilgon and Katzo start their ultimate plan to defeat the giant robot. However, the girl suddenly kills herself, surprising Katzo, who almost can’t revive her in time. She did that to have her arm back.

They charge towards the giant. While Katzo uses as many whips as he has to secure and make it fall, Pencilgon repeatedly attacks with her spear. When her spear breaks, she manages to break its waist. However, it enters a berserk mode and begins to shoot more laser beams and missiles.

They have no time to stop and think, as one of those could hit Sunraku at any moment. When they think about that, they are sure he’ll joke about it for months, saying they couldn’t even hold back Wethermon’s pet.

Pencilgon gets a new spear and recites a spell: Shadow Wedge. It lasts five seconds and paralyzes an enemy. She throws another spear at him, which Katzo punches using an incredibly powerful attack. The weapon pierces its waist, and soon, the robot becomes nothing but dust.

After using his last resurrection item, Sunraku is finally ready to win. He merges both daggers, increasing the likelihood of his criticals. The player also plans on activating Climax Boost and Hungry Wolf, but the first one can’t be used at the moment. Initially, he freaks out, trying to think of a new plan in seconds. However, Pencilgon and Katzo throw a knife at Wethermon, giving him enough time to do what he needs.

Sunraku pierces himself with them, using his luck to endure the strike. He survives, still having 1 HP, which lets him activate Climax Boost. A strong orange aura surrounds him, and he clashes against the unique monster. He perfectly parries the attack, breaking Wethermon’s armor and sword. The samurai holds a cherry blossom before ultimately dying.

During the credits, we get a little treat. We see Setsuna happily walking in a flower field with the human Wethermon, who’s smiling too.

The Episode Review

This is a great ending for the fight. You can see how powerful their enemies are, but they still win thanks to their skills, plans, and teamwork. Honestly, there are few things more gratifying in fighting series than that.

And, even during a tense battle, the anime doesn’t stop making hilarious jokes. At first, you think Pencilgon will say that it would be bad if a missile hits Sunraku because they could lose their chances of winning. However, she is complaining about the fact that he’ll torture them with jokes about that if it happens. Also, that’s another incredibly relatable moment that many people have been through.

The animation during the whole arc is very fluid and pretty. However, this ending surpasses all that came before. Sunraku, with the orange aura, fighting Wethermon is incredible. It’s hard to describe how excited you get when you see something so amazing. And, to contrast with that, after the unique monster dies, it becomes way softer. It’s a incredible use of different styles.
