Shaitaan (2024) Movie Review – A deep dive into the world of mind control

A deep dive into the world of mind control

Ever since Shaitaan was announced, there has been a lot of speculation about the story. With prolific actors like R Madhavan and Ajay Devgn in the film, fans were excited to see what this will be based on. The movie is a remake of the 2023 Gujarati language film VashShaitaan, and has been received favourably at the cinemas and now the film has finally dropped on Netflix and is already doing quite well on the streaming platform.

The film narrates the story of a family who ends up in a tricky situation when a stranger named Vanraj Kashyap possesses their daughter – Janvi and asks her father – Kabir to give Janvi up. Vanraj asks to take Janvi with him and asks her family to donate Janvi to him. However, Kabir is persistent in saving his daughter and uses all his might to stop Vanraj from taking his daughter away.

The film is a simple story with a pretty straightforward ending. However, we do not know Vanraj’s motive in the first half of the film. This leaves viewers with a lot of curiosity and questions about what the reason behind Vanraj trying to control Janvi is. This is well shot with amazing performances from R Madhavan as Vanraj and Janki Bodiwala as Janvi.

The other important characters in the film – Kabir (played by Ajay Devgn), Jyoti (played by Jyothika) and Dhruv played by Anngad Raaj are great additions as well. The film ends up as a typical Bollywood masala with how Kabir puts in all his might to save Janvi. Vanraj is the most threatening version of R Madhavan we have ever seen.

Throughout the running minutes of the film, you, as a viewer are left scratching your head, thinking what exactly is the reason that Vanraj wants to take Janvi with him. It is only in the final moments that you understand what Vanraj’s reason is and just how evil he can get. This is a disclaimer to many people and works as an advisory on how never to trust strangers.

The background score of Shaitaan is well done and manages to make the film look suspenseful and menacing. The story is simple yet layered with details about dark magic and mind control which many fans of suspense will enjoy. The film ends with an epilogue, which is a definite highlight. The film makes for a perfect weekend watch and is extremely thrilling.
