See You in Another Life – Episode 1 “Baby” Recap & Review

Baby

Episode 1 kicks off with Adult Baby looking back on his childhood, where he finds himself in court as the main suspect in a bombing case that rocked Madrid. Baby wasn’t new to a life of crime; he had been picked up by the cops many times for stealing from nearby shops.

His childhood was as tough as they come—poverty, not enough food, and a father who was a drug addict leading Baby’s mom to cut ties with him. To make ends meet, Baby took up odd jobs and even worked as a helper at a construction site but despite all this, Baby always dreamed of becoming a footballer and getting signed by Real Madrid.

Baby’s life took a turn when he decided to steal some chicken from a delivery driver’s scooter. This little act of theft leads him to meet Emilio, who, on their first encounter, jokes that he can help Baby buy a fancy condo in the posh part of town. Emilio takes Baby to lunch in his Mercedes at a swanky restaurant, where he orders expensive crabs and lobsters, a luxury not everyone could afford back then.

During their meal, Emilio digs into Baby’s personal life, asking about his family, their work, and his dreams. From their chat, Emilio realizes that Baby is the kind of guy who wants to get rich quickly but doesn’t want to work hard for it. So, he sees an opportunity to use Baby to expand his business.

Emilio shows Baby his flashy cars, and Baby can’t help but wonder how Emilio affords such a lavish lifestyle. It turns out Emilio is a big-time drug dealer peddling everything from crack to cocaine. Baby is impressed by Emilio’s lifestyle and starts idolizing him, longing to be just like him. So, it’s no surprise that Baby begins spending most of his time with Emilio, forming a close bond.

Baby opens up to Emilio about his family, including his father, who is a junkie in jail. One day, Baby asks Emilio for a favor, and Emilio gives him a brick of Keif to have some fun with. Baby hands the brick to his mother, asking her to smuggle it to her husband (Baby’s father) inside the jail, but when she refuses,, Baby decides to sell it to make some cash.

In just four days, Baby manages to sell the brick and earns 400 euros from it. Impressed by his quick success, Emilio starts giving Baby more drugs to sell. Baby hands a small portion for his mother to smuggle into jail, where the drugs fetch a higher price than on the streets.

Life seems good for Baby, so he doesn’t ask too many questions or complain. When Baby gets robbed by local thugs, Emilio gives him a gun for protection. This makes Baby feel proud, and he starts seeing himself as some kind of tough guy.

The Episode Review

In case you haven’t pieced it together yet, “See You in Another Life” is based on the real-life Madrid 2004 bombing attack that tragically took 192 lives. Baby and Emilio were responsible and arrested for transporting the bomb to the location. It’s a classic case that reminds us that not everything that glitters is gold.

Baby’s desire for a lavish life without putting in the hard work and his choice to follow the wrong path and idolize the wrong person ultimately led to his downfall.
