Scott Pilgrim Takes Off – Season 1 Episode 4 Recap & Review

Whatever

Episode 4 of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off begins with Lucas receiving a phone call from his agent. Lucas’s agent warns him to stop acting recklessly in public since it will cost him his livelihood. She says she’s booked a great opportunity for him in Toronto and wants him to take it seriously since this may be his last gig. We cut to Ramona visiting Torontowood Studios to see if Lucas took Scott. She spots Neil working on the set and is baffled that he wrote a movie script for Lucas.

Ramona notices Envy’s starring as her in this film. We realize the script Neil wrote is based on the events of the actual Scott Pilgrim storyline. Afterwards, Neil drives Ramona to Lucas’s trailer. Ramona asks Lucas about Scott but he’s more focused on nailing his role in this film. Wallace bumps into Ramona and Neil at the set. He’s on set because he wants to observe the person playing him in the film. Wallace berates the actor playing him and the director allows him to take the role from him.

Ramona revisits Lucas and he allows her to enter. Lucas reflects on how terrible the script is and asks her why she’s here. Ramona reveals Scott didn’t die and asks him if he knows what happened to him. Lucas says he has nothing to do with his disappearance and finds it odd Ramona’s performing an investigation for a boy who’s dating a teenager. Ramona refutes this by stating Lucas is doing the same since he’s playing Scott in the film.

Suddenly, the paparazzi ninjas arrive, resulting in a chase and battle sequence between Lucas and them. After the battle, Ramona approaches Lucas and he questions why she’d help him. Ramona reminds Lucas of the moment she helped him in the past with his skateboarding antics. However, Lucas recalls seeing Ramona with another man, resulting in him snapping his skateboard and pursuing acting to mend his internal wound. However, he contemplates a bit and thanks Ramona for steering him toward his luxurious path.

Ramona sneaks Lucas out of the studio. He reveals he’ll no longer star in the movie and that his agent’s dumping him as a client. Lucas tells Ramona he didn’t take Scott, so she wishes him luck in life and they part ways. Suddenly, Ramona spots Todd exiting a portal and believes he may know what happened to Scott. Todd meets with the studio’s security and says he’ll be starring as Scott in the upcoming film.

The episode closes with Ramona planning to interrogate Todd.

The Episode Review

We continue observing Ramona’s investigative endeavors and peer into the life of her second ex Lucas Lee. Despite having gnarly skateboarding skills and taking part in a thrilling boarding sequence with paparazzi ninjas, this episode feels the weakest out of the pack (so far). Unlike Roxie, Lucas doesn’t receive the same level of closure as Romana, and more could’ve been done in that regard.

Moreover, the episode leaves his character jobless and purposeless. Many would’ve preferred if the two had a stronger and more intimate scenario with each other. Otherwise, Lucas’s plot in this tale feels a bit pointless outside of giving Ramona a new lead concerning Todd and his powers. On the other hand, this episode had some compelling humor and dashing visuals.

From its witty banter to well-choreographed stunts, fans will adore the splash of colors, fourth-wall humor, energetic soundtrack, and remarkable dialogue sprinkled throughout episode four’s run. Although this episode carried mixed baggage, I’m excited to see what Todd’s character brings to the table in episode five. Hopefully, he’ll give Ramona the information she needs to rescue Scott.
