Ready Set Love is a Thai romantic comedy-drama laden with mystery and suspense. The show is set in an alternative universe where an epidemic leads to a situation where the number of newborn baby girls highly outnumbers the number of newborn boys.

Therefore, men in present-day Thailand are viewed as an endangered species, and the government forces the mothers to forego their male children so they can grow up under government protection in a place called The Farm.

Every few years, the government holds a competition called Ready Set Love where hundreds of women, mostly from the high-class society, compete to marry one of five men (Gentlemen) from The Farm who have come of age. The winners get to live on The Farm with full government support to raise a family.

The premise of Ready Set Love offers different interesting themes as observed in the parallel universe, including gender inequality, power dynamics, corruption, segregation in terms of class, rich versus poor, and emphasis on traditional male-female relationships.

Ready Set Love starts as a typical rom-com but morphs into something deeper, delving into ideas of wealth, taking advantage of the poor, winner-take-all attitude, bureaucracy, and consequences of failing to comply with the system. The script evolves from a reality show about competing for love to taking a stand against the system that seeks to control the people under the guise of securing the future.

In addition to the interesting concept of a game show with the prize being a husband, Ready Set Love stands out because of the amazingly talented actors.

Our protagonist, Day, is a hardworking ordinary woman who couldn’t care less about the government-sponsored competition. She is a charming character who is devoted to her sister, determined, and ready to sacrifice everything for the people she loves.

Alongside Day is Son, the most handsome man on The Farm and every girl’s dream man. On the outside, he seems icy and aloof, but he has deep-seated trauma regarding his stay at The Farm.

When he is being himself, he is loving, considerate, caring, and a vulnerable soul. The Chemistry between Day and Son is off the charts, and the audience will feel the urge to root for their love despite feeling so far out of reach throughout the episodes.

Another unique character is Chanel. She seems to have everything, including influence, power, wealth, and status. At first glance, she is the definition of a mean girl, but with a closer look, you will find out that she is a girl yearning for acknowledgement. She is a people pleaser and rarely goes for what she wants but chooses to do what others, especially her mother, want of her.

Alongside Chanel is Max, a blissful character who is a breath of fresh air in The Farm. He is daring as he chooses to go after a woman who seems out of his reach, loving, considerate, and follows his heart.

Ms. Kwan represents the government in this universe. She is controlling, corrupt, greedy for power, and selfish. Other significant characters include Almond, cautious, afraid of stepping outside his comfort zone, easily manipulated, a coward, and a betrayer. The fantastic support characters successfully develop the narrative, enhancing the comedy and thrill of Ready Set Love.

Overall, Ready Set Love’s unique premise is a refreshing and entertaining show that blends romance, comedy, and social issues. It is a thrilling addition to the new category of Thailand shows on Netflix. Underneath the comedic exterior, the show delves into parental pressure, corruption, and pressure to conform to society.
