Sony has announced the latest line-up of PS Plus Essential titles which will be made available to subscribers on Tuesday, October 3.

The games available in October are the sci-fi horror title The Callisto Protocol, the rather more relaxed Farming Simulator 22, and the dark fantasy RPG Weird West, details of which can be found below. These are on top of the PS Plus Extra and Premium games that were made available to subscribers in September, which included NieR Replicant and a plethora of Star Ocean titles.

The Callisto Protocol

In space, no one can hear you scream. But when playing this sci-fi horror title that launched at the end of 2022, your neighbours might hear you cry out in terror if you fall prey to the jump scares and gruesome moments that are scattered throughout the game.

The Callisto Protocol will be instantly familiar to you if have ever played any of the Dead Space titles as it shares a similar combat mechanic and the same third-person, narrative-driven gameplay. The game is considered a spiritual successor to the aforementioned space chillers and it is directed by Dead Space director Glen Schofield, which explains why you might feel a sense of deja vu while playing.

With excellent graphics, a compelling storyline, and plenty of blood and gore for those who like that kind of thing, this is one game that is worth adding to your library this October if you haven’t played it already.

Official Description:

Farming Simulator 22

Farming Simulator 22 isn’t a game for everyone. If you don’t have the patience to run your own farm, with everything that it entails, such as breeding livestock, growing crops, and investing in new equipment, then you should probably play The Callisto Protocol this month instead of this farming sim.

But if you do have an interest in farming or if you enjoy simulation games in general, then this might be your go-to game in October. The benefit of a farming game that you can play at home (instead of running your own farm for real) is that you won’t have to get up at the crack of dawn and you won’t have to suffer the smell of manure.

The game is far less back-breaking too, although we still recommend you give your eyes and fingers a rest as the game might still be physically tiring after many hours of play.

Official Description:

Take on the role of a modern farmer and creatively build your farm in three diverse American and European environments. Farming Simulator 22 offers a huge variety of farming operations focusing on agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry – now with the exciting addition of seasonal cycles!

More than 400 machines and tools from over 100 real agricultural brands like John Deere, CLAAS, Case IH, New Holland, Fendt, Massey Ferguson, Valtra and many more are included to sow and harvest crops like wheat, corn, potatoes and cotton. New machine categories and crops add new gameplay mechanics to the experience. Run your farm cooperatively in multiplayer and extend the game by a multitude of free community-created modifications.

Farming Simulator 22 offers more player freedom than ever before and challenges you to become a successful farmer – so start farming and let the good times grow!

Features:

  • Multiplayer modes for cooperative farming
  • New maps, crops, machines, and tools
  • In-depth character creation system

Weird West

From one of the minds behind Dishonored, ex-Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio, is this first title from developer WolfEye Studios. Unlike Dishonored, this is a top-down RPG reminiscent of the Diablo games, set in a supernatural version of the Wild West where lawmen and gunmen share the frontier with such fantastical inhabitants as cannibalistic sirens and stitched-together “pigmen.”

All of your actions have consequences so care needs to be taken as you move through the world as one of the game’s five interconnected characters.

Weird West contains a permadeath feature so if you’re not careful, it could be game over for the character you’re controlling, quite literally, as they’ll meet a permanent end. Of course, you could restart the game from scratch and resurrect them but if you’re more than halfway through the game’s estimated 18-hour runtime, you might be less than willing to reload your pistols and start again!

Official Description:

Discover a dark fantasy reimagining of the Wild West where lawmen and gunslingers share the frontier with fantastical creatures, each playing with their own rules and their own peculiar motives in this isometric action RPG.

The game supports different styles of play in a simulated sandbox world where characters, factions, and even places react to a player’s decisions, and players are faced with brutal choices and consequences that can’t be undone – including death.

Discover the world through origin stories of different characters, moving from one character’s journey to the next until all converge in a final chapter.

Features:

  • A sandbox world where characters, factions, and places react to a player’s decisions
  • Twin-stick-style action gameplay
  • Five playable characters
