Movies and Shows coming to Netflix USA in August 2023

Netflix is jam-packed with great titles this month, with blockbuster movies, exciting new shows, and fascinating documentaries making their debut on the streaming service.

August 2

Soulcatcher (2023)

Potentially exciting action thriller from Poland about a military contractor who accepts a mission in a country ruled by a local warlord. His mission? To seize a powerful weapon that can turn people into savage killers! 

August 3

Heartstopper – Season 2

The hit teen series based on the graphic novel series by Alice Oseman returns for its second season. As well as charting the growing relationship between Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke), Season 2 will also focus on Tao and Elle as they try to work out if they can be more than just friends. 

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges and Tao and Elle work out if they can ever be more than just friends. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.”

Heartstopper Season 3 is expected to go into production later this year. 

The River Wild (2023)

Leighton Meester, Taran Killam, and Adam Brody star in this reworking of the 1994 survival thriller about a pair of siblings who embark on a whitewater rafting adventure with a childhood friend who turns out to be more dangerous than he appears. 

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (2023)

This live-action adaption of the manga series written by Haro Aso (Alice in Borderland) is centered around a weary office worker named Akira who ironically starts to feel more alive when a zombie apocalypse ravages his town. He sets himself a mission to complete all 100 items on his bucket list before he…well, kicks the bucket!

August 4

The Hunt for Veerappan – Limited Series

Netflix’s new docuseries follows the rise and fall of Veerappan, a dreaded smuggler whose bloody reign sparked a 20-year-long manhunt in South India. As per reports, this bandit was wanted for killing approximately 184 people and poaching more than 2000 elephants for their ivory. 

August 8

Zombieverse – Season 1

In this South Korean reality series, a variety of entertainers are thrust into the heart of Seoul amidst a zombie apocalypse where they must work together in order to survive the undead that are all around them. 

Actress Lee Si Young (Sweet Home), comedian Park Na Rae, and rapper Kim Cheol are among the celebrities trying not to get eaten. 

August 10

Marry My Dead Body (2023)

This Taiwanese comedy about a same-sex relationship has an unusual twist: one-half of the couple is a ghost! The other is a homophobic police officer who forms a special bond with this spirit of a man whose life was cut short under mysterious circumstances. 

Painkiller – Limited Series

The causes and consequences of America’s opioid epidemic unfold in this new limited series from the producers of Narcos and Patriots Day. Uzo Aduba, Matthew Broderick, and Taylor Kitsch are among the cast of this drama that exposes the roots of the most pressing health epidemic in the 21st century. 

August 11

Down For Love – Season 1

This five-episode reality dating show follows ten people living with Down syndrome who embark on a series of dates to (hopefully) find their own true love. 

Heart of Stone (2023)

Gal Gadot stars in this new action thriller that is expected to be one of the biggest Netflix movies of the year. The Wonder Woman star takes on the role of an intelligence operative for a shadowy global peacekeeping agency who is tasked with stopping a hacker from stealing its most valuable and dangerous asset. 

August 16

The Chosen One – Season 1

This promising new fantasy series is based on the American Jesus series of comic books by Mark Millar and Peter Gross. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Jodie, a twelve-year-old boy in Baja California, suddenly discovers he has Jesus-like powers: he can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! As the Evangelical and the Yaquí leaders in town try to get him to use his powers to save mankind, all Jodie wants to do is impress the girl he likes and stand up to his bullies. As Jodie struggles and eventually comes to terms with his destiny, everything gets thrown for a loop when he realizes he discovers the truth around his identity.”

August 18

Mask Girl – Season 1

This new K-drama follows the adventures of Kim Mo-mi, an unremarkable office worker who fulfills her childhood dreams of becoming a celebrity by becoming an online streamer known as Mask Girl. According to the official synopsis of this dark series which is based on a popular webtoon, “a chain of ill-fated events overtakes her life.”

The Monkey King (2023)

Stephanie Hsu, Jimmy O. Yang, and BD Wong are just a few of the stars providing the voicework for this action-packed animated movie that follows Monkey and his magical fighting stick as he goes into battle against demons, dragons, and gods. 

August 24

Who Is Erin Carter? – Season 1

Erin Carter is a British school teacher living the Expat dream in Spain. But is that all she is? After she is caught up in a supermarket robbery, she is recognized by one of the robbers who seems to know her real identity! 

Evin Ahmad, Sean Teale, and Douglas Henshall are among the cast of this intriguing new thriller series. 

August 25

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah! (2023)

Adam Sandler and members of his own family star in this new comedy based on the novel by Fiona Rosenbloom. The movie follows Stacy (Sunny Sandler) and Lydia (Samantha Lorraine), two BFFs whose plans for an epic Bat Mitzvah go comically awry when a popular boy at their middle school threatens their friendship and their rite of passage.

August 31

One Piece – Season 1

Live-action adaptation of the popular manga and anime series that follows the adventures of the fugitive Straw Hat Pirates as they explore the dangerous oceans, lands, and beyond. The 8-part series will focus on Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), a teenage boy with enormous strength and agility who sails across the seas to find the One Piece and become the King of the Pirates.
