Orion and the Dark (2024)
Release Date: February 2
Based on the children’s book of the same name, Orion and the Dark tells the story of Orion, a rather anxious young chap with an irrational fear of murderous gutter clowns (we’re presuming he’s seen the IT movies), the ocean, and the thing he has to contend with on a nightly basis – the dark!
When the literal embodiment of his nightly fear pays him a visit, Orion is whisked away on a roller coaster ride around the world by Dark who helps the boy overcome his nighttime anxiety. Will Orion finally be able to let go of his fears?
One Day – Limited Series
Release Date: February 8
Just in time for Valentine’s Day is this second adaptation of the novel by David Nicholls. It was originally adapted as a film in 2011 with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess in the lead roles but heading the cast this time around are relative newcomers Amika Mob and Leo Woodall who star as the two romantics who find the time to meet up with one another on the same date every year.
Both the book and the film were critically well-received so here’s hoping we’re not left broken-hearted by this adaptation.
Einstein and the Bomb (2024)
Release Date: February 16
Feature documentary exploring the life of Albert Einstein and his complex relationship with Hitler, Germany, and the atom bomb that was detonated over two Japanese cities, with devastating consequences. Told via archival footage and dramatizations, the film shows how Einstein’s work changed the course of history forever.
Can I Tell You A Secret? – Limited Series
Release Date: February 21
This two-part documentary tells the story of the victims of serial cyberstalker Matthew Hardy, a man whose sustained online harassment tore the lives of these women apart. The film details the police investigation into his crimes and how his victims helped the police snare this online abuser.
Avatar: The Last Airbender – Season 1
Release Date: February 22
The last time we saw a live-action adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon series was in 2010 when M Night Shyamalan brought the much-derided The Last Airbender to the big screen. You can be forgiven for being a little cautious about this upcoming show as a consequence of that gigantic flop but as Netflix has invested a lot of money into this one, we think the show is one worth keeping an eye on.
The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Aang who is tasked with liberating the Water Tribe and Earth Kingdoms from the reign of the Fire Kingdom. As he has the ability to be a “bender” – somebody who can bend the Earth’s elements at will – he’s more than up to the mission.
Code 8: Part II (2024)
Release Date: February 28
In the first part of Code 8, we followed the story of Connor (Robbie Amell), an electrokinetic PWP (Person With Powers) and how he got caught up in the deadly world of Lincoln City crime after falling in with a telekinetic enforcer named Garrett (Stephen Amell). In this sequel, Connor has cut ties with his former criminal associate but his attempts to stay out of trouble falter when he is forced to help a teenager escape from corrupt police officers.
