The Marvels is the biggest highlight on Disney+ this month but there is much more to enjoy, including the epic historical drama series Shogun, a new animated short from Pixar, and the streaming debut of the coming-of-age movie Suncoast.

Pixar’s Self

The first animated short in Pixar’s ‘SparkShorts’ program tells the story of a wooden doll who embarks on a journey of self-discovery after making an ill-fated wish upon a star.
The Marvels (2023)
Release Date: February 7
Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau team up to save the universe in a movie that was deemed less than marvellous by many critics. The lead actresses are great but the film sadly fails to soar when it comes to coherent storytelling and special effects wizardry.

Suncoast (2024)
Release Date: February 9
Nico Parker, Laura Linney and Woody Harrellson star in this semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story about a young woman dealing with her brother’s serious illness.
Shogun – Season 1
Release Date: February 27
17th-century tale told from the perspective of British hero John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai while being used as a pawn by a Japanese leader who is struggling to reach the top of the ruling chain.
Iwájú – All Episodes
Release Date: February 28
This new animated series set in a futuristic Lagos deals with such themes as inequality, class, and changing the status quo.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“The exciting coming-of-age story follows Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds.
Kugali filmmakers—including director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku—take viewers on a unique journey into the world of “Iwájú,” bursting with unique visual elements and technological advancements inspired by the spirit of Lagos.”
We Live Here: The Midwest

This new documentary shines a spotlight on the individual experiences of several LGBTQ families who face discrimination in their churches, schools, and neighbourhoods.
