‘Minecraft Master Builds’ by Mojang – Book Review

An impressive creative showcase

Minecraft is an amazingly creative and surprisingly deep game. There are a myriad of different ways you can play, from a simple survival game to a large biome with difficult creatures, working with your friends to try and make a house and survive as long as you can with permadeath.

Further still, the game boasts an impressive creative set of tools, allowing you to let your imagination run wild.

Minecraft Master Builds is the latest book showing off the incredible and reattaching creations that “master builders” have made across the world using that aforementioned Create Mode. With beautiful illustrations and a deep-dive into each builder, the 190 pages or so show off a wide variety of different creations.

Some of the creations are very grounded and simply work to show off what can be achieved by adapting real-life objects like a pirate ship or a huge hot air balloon. However, as the chapters progress (each chapter is broken up into showcasing a different creator) some of the more elaborate and showstopping pieces come to the foreground. Chapter 14, for example, shows off a project called “Dystopian Mindset”, a devilishly creative endeavour that looks like something right off a psychedelic album cover.

While the illustrations are likely to reel you in, flipping through the pages eagerly to see what else awaits you, it’s actually worth taking the time to read each of these creators’ journeys and how they made these pieces of art as they give some solid advice and inspirational messages to budding Minecraft players.

“To build on a large scale I would advise to have a solid foundation with simple constructions,” natsu3012 says in Chapter Five, “Simplicity is not a defect, it allows a better reading.” This is just one quote but to be honest, you could grab a whole bunch through this to inspire you.

Even if you only have a passing interest in Minecraft, Minecraft Master Builds is a must-read for any inspiring fan or creative individual. The illustrations are beautiful, the layout of each page makes it very easy to sit and skim through, while those who take the time to read everything are in for a real treat too. This beautiful book is well worth your time.
