Lady Ballers (2023) Movie Review – Dailywire+ delivers a home run with satirical dark comedy

Dailywire+ delivers a home run with satirical dark comedy

The satirical comedy on Dailywire+ follows the journey of a once-great coach and his championship team, who are hell-bent on turning their lives around and they do so through some rather unsavory means.

By getting back together with their three-time championship coach, the former high school basketball championship squad is looking to make a splash in the women’s sports world. The men’s group “Lady Ballers” defeat female competitors in women’s sports by taking advantage of a loophole in the Global Games.

A series of mishaps laced with plenty of dark comedy pushes the coach and team to self-reflect and take charge of their situation, which results in them delivering the message: winners are just losers who win.

The primary themes of the storyline revolve around gender politics, deceit and morality. The movie is both informative and entertaining owing to its lighthearted approach and sharp humour, which helps lighten the weighty subject matter.

The satirical comedy serves as one of the the movie’s strongest elements. While comedies have been falling short in recent years, this element absolutely lives up to expectations and will have you in fits of laughter. In addition, the sports film succeeds in conveying its core message in a way that is both touching and lighthearted.

The movie deserves a lot of praise for its storytelling, which steals the show. Similarly, the film features top-notch performances from all of the performers. Particularly, Jeremy Boreing’s performance as Coach Rob is excellent, and he keeps you engaged the entire time. This show-stopping coach absolutely kills it with his hilarious one-liners and acting chops.

Political commentator Matt Walsh, who plays Kris Dilby, also delivers an outstanding performance in the movie. This character’s sole job is to make you laugh, and he succeeds admirably. Additionally, the remainder of the primary cast, which includes Blain Crain, Jake Crain, Billie Rae Brandt, Tyler Fischer, Lexie Contsuri, David Cone, and Daniel Considine, all do a good job.

Renowned clinical psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson makes an entertaining cameo appearance here too, as do well-known political and cultural commentators Ben Shapiro, Candace Owens, Brett Cooper, Michael Knowles and Andrew Klaven. Their brief appearances serve a profound purpose as they brilliantly convey their messages and provide much-needed comic relief.

That said, the movie doesn’t have the finest production value and one could point out that this does look rather messy at certain points.

As a whole, the satirical sports comedy is a fun watch and conveys its message in an entertaining and engaging manner. The acting, story telling, and humour are all top-notch. If you’ve been longing for movies with some bold, dark humour, this one is for you.
