What is Kevin Spacey doing now?
Spacey Unmasked, a new documentary about the sexual harassment allegations against actor Kevin Spacey, has aired on Channel 4 in the UK. The documentary is available on 4’s on-demand streaming service for those who missed its terrestrial premiere on May 6, 2024. In the US, the documentary will stream on Max on a currently undisclosed date.
The documentary investigates new claims about Spacey’s misconduct via interviews with ten men, nine of whom speak out for the first time about their experiences with the actor. It’s a troubling watch, as we mentioned in our review.
Last year, the LA Confidential actor was found not guilty of nine sexual offences at a London criminal trial. In 2022, he also won a Civil lawsuit after being accused of unwanted sexual advances by Anthony Rapp, who claimed Spacey inappropriately touched him at a party in 1986 when he was aged just 14.
Unsurprisingly, the allegations against Spacey have tarnished his reputation, despite him being acquitted of the charges made against him. The new allegations made in Spacey Unmasked are likely to drag his reputation down further.
Previously known for his roles in such celebrated films as The Usual Suspects and the hit TV show, House of Cards, the actor has rarely been seen on screen in recent years. There’s a chance his career is all but over. But before we jump ahead with these assumptions, here’s everything we know about what Kevin Spacey is doing now.
What is Kevin Spacey doing now?
Kevin Spacey’s career took a downward turn following Anthony Rapp’s accusations against him. In 2017, he was dismissed from House of Cards amidst fresh allegations from the show’s crew members, and his scenes from the movie All the Money in the World were cut after Christopher Plummer replaced him..
However, Spacey hasn’t entirely been absent from the world of moviemaking.
In 2022, he appeared in the Italian film The Man Who Drew God, a tale of a blind artist who (ironically, considering Spacey’s situation) falls from grace after rising to fame. He was also cast in a voice role for the independent British thriller Control, which was released in 2023.
The actor features more prominently in the new movie Peter Five Eight, a comedy thriller about a glamorous real estate agent with a dark secret. Spacey plays a hitman who is hired to kill her. The movie had a limited run in March 2024 and it’s due for a wider release from May 9, 2024.
The film’s director, Michael Hall, defended his decision to cast Spacey in an interview published here.
Hall said:
“This is where innuendo and allegations are put under the microscope and looked at intensely from all angles. The allegations against him [Spacey] were put to the test and he was exonerated.”
He went on to say:
“There will be voices online that say bad things about the movie and those involved, because they worked with Kevin. I do feel that they are a relatively small group. I don’t think artistic endeavors should be governed by negativity. They should be governed by inspiration.”
We don’t know if this will be a comeback picture for Spacey as there’s a chance his career will take another hit following the Channel 4 documentary. He has hit back against the new allegations against him, stating “I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network’s one-sided documentary about me in their desperate attempt for ratings” on X.
Spacey has promised a fuller response to the British documentary after it airs. Will this be the last we hear from the once-celebrated actor? At the time of writing, we have no idea. But one thing’s for sure – those within the Hollywood elite had better watch out, as people are no longer remaining silent about the mistreatment they have suffered.
