Kaiju No. 8
This brand-new anime series is making its grand debut on Crunchyroll. The story is set in a fictional version of Japan, where giant kaiju/monsters roam its areas. Moreover, this version of Japan has assigned a military unit called the Japan Defense Force to extinguish the threat.
In the middle of this ongoing struggle lies our protagonist, Kafka, a kaiju corpse cleaner, who wants the Japan Defense Force to recruit him. After something catastrophic occurs to Kafka during his daily routine, he must find ways to adjust to his new circumstances.

Kaiju No. 8 Episode 2 Release Date
The entire schedule for Kaiju No. 8 Season 1 so far is as follows:
- Episode 2 – April 20th 2024
Episode 2 will be released on Saturday 20th April at 12:30am (JST) / 3:30pm (GMT) / 11:30am (ET) / 8:30am (PT). This is a weekend show, with 1 episode releasing each week on Saturdays.
Expect episode 2 to be roughly 25 minutes long, which is consistent with the timeframe for the rest of the show.
Where Can I Watch Kaiju No. 8?
Kaiju No. 8 is making its grand debut on Crunchyroll for global audiences. In Japan, it’ll be streaming exclusively on the TV Tokyo Network and others. Also, Crunchyroll has announced that they’ll live-stream each episode worldwide as soon as it airs in Japan.
Crunchyroll will be live-streaming each episode at 11:00pm (JST) / 2:00pm (GMT) / 10:00am (ET) / 7:00am (PT) on their platform. These streams will be in Japanese with English, Latin American Spanish, Portuguese, German, and French subtitles. For more information, click here.

How Many Episodes Will Kaiju No. 8 Have?
It’s expected that Kaiju No. 8 will have 12 episodes in total. With that in mind, 10 episodes will remain after this one. As long as the schedule doesn’t change, it should look something like this:
- Episode 3 – April 27th
- Episode 4 – May 4th
- Episode 5 – May 11th
- Episode 6 – May 18th
- Episode 7 – May 25th
- Episode 8 – June 1st
- Episode 9 – June 8th

What Happened In Episode 1?
Kaiju No. 8 Episode 1 starts with a kaiju causing trouble in Yokohama, Japan. While several officials evacuate pedestrians to safe locations, the Defense Corp’s Third Division, led by Mina Ashiro, swoops in and defeats the troublesome kaiju. Then, we cut away to Kafka Hibino (our protagonist) observing the kaiju’s remains from afar.
Kafka and his team head for the kaiju’s location to handle clean-up duty. After Kafka helps one of his allies with an issue, his leader tells him to handle intestine duty. Later, we see Kafka reflecting on his intestine duty activity at home. During said reflection, he overhears a news broadcast about Mina. Kafka recalls an instance between Mina and himself.
During said instance, Kafka says he wants to exterminate the kaiju with Mina at his side. Then, Kafka reflects on his current job and the good it does for himself and society. Kafka regroups with his co-workers and meets a recruit named Reno. He and Reno discuss Reno’s dream of becoming a Defense Corps member.
After that, Kafka and the others report to the dead kaiju’s location. Kafka’s leader assigns Kafka and Reno with intestine clean-up work to Kafka’s dismay. After they perform their duties, Kafka and Reno head to a park to relax. Kafka gives Reno some gear to help him cope with their current duty. Later, Kafka bids farewell to his colleagues. Before he goes, Reno approaches and informs Kafka that Kafka can still apply for the Defense Corps.
Kafka thanks Reno. Before Reno leaves, a yoju attempts to harm him. Kafka saves Reno and tells him to flee. He and the yoju engage in a chase sequence. During this sequence, we receive a flashback that gives us more details about Kafka’s dreams and relationship with Mina. Before the yoju murders Kafka, Reno saves him. Before the two perish, Mina and her forces arrive and exterminate the yoju. Later Kakfa and Reno awaken in a hospital.
The two touch upon their yoju encounter. During this discussion, Kafka vows to apply for the Defense Corps again. Suddenly, a small kaiju appears. The kaiju enters Kafka’s body via his mouth. Reno checks on Kafka and realizes he’s become a kaiju. Kafka ensures Reno that it’s him and an old man appears and notices Kafka in his kaiju-form.
The old man pulls out his phone and Reno tells Kafka they should leave the hospital immediately. Then, we enter a flashback involving Mina and Kafka. Kafka informs Mina of ways to deal with kaiju and Mina says she’s afraid to fight big kaiju. Kafka promises Mina that he’ll be with her. In the present, Mina is lying in a bath. Then, someone calls her. They inform her that a kaiju’s been spotted at one of the city’s hospitals.
The episode closes with Mina planning to investigate the area with her team.
