It Follows (2014) Ending Explained – Is Jay dead or alive?

It Follows Plot Summary

It Follows is a horror drama written and directed by David Robert Michael. The story revolves around Jay (Maika Monroe), who is cursed by a ghost that follows her wherever she goes and her efforts, along with her friends, to get rid of it.

The gripping drama begins with Jay fleeing from her house, feeling like someone is following her. She runs onto the road, where several people offer to help, but she looks distressed and declines. She then rushes to her parent’s house, takes a car, and drives to the beach.

What happens on Jay’s date with Hugh?

As the scene shifts, we return to the present day, where Jay is enjoying the summer days in the pool beside her house with her friends Yara, Paul, Kelly, and Annie. Annie asks Jay about her date with Hugh and if they are meeting again. Jay confirms that they are meeting the next day. Jay and Hugh meet up, and the former suggests a game where they each choose two random people they would love to swap lives with.

Hugh initially hesitates but eventually agrees. He chooses a baby for the first person, thinking they have a simple life. For the second person, he points to a girl in a yellow dress. However, Jay cannot see the girl, which unnerves Hugh. He grabs Jay’s hand, and they start to run away.  Jay gets confused by Hugh’s behavior and doesn’t understand what’s making him so uncomfortable. Despite this, she doesn’t ask any questions, and they end up having sex in the car.

What curse does Hugh pass on to Jay?

After Jay and Hugh have sex, Hugh kidnaps Jay and knocks her unconscious using chloroform. When she regains consciousness, she finds herself tied to a wheelchair while Hugh searches for something with a large flashlight. He talks to Jay, fearing that Hugh wants to kill her. Jay’s fears escalate when a naked person comes close to her, and for some reason, Hugh seems relieved. He unties Jay, and they leave in the car. The ghost follows the car but suddenly disappears.

On the way, Hugh tells Jay about the curse that transfers to whoever has sex with the cursed person. In the process, the original host is free of the curse, but if the ghost kills the cursed person, the curse then reverts to the original individual. Hugh admits he slept with Jay to pass on the curse to her as a means to free himself from it. Hugh tells Jay that the only way for her to get rid of the curse is to have sex with someone else and pass it on. Hugh then leaves Jay outside her house and drives away.

What happens to Greg?

Greg is one of Jay’s friends, but unlike the others, he doesn’t believe Jay is cursed; he thinks it’s a mental issue. Despite this, he supports her and suggests she see a therapist. When Jay’s other friend tries to convince Greg the same, he doesn’t care.

One day at the beach while everyone is trying to relax. Jay suddenly sees a girl walking towards her. She tries to run, but her friends, unable to see the girl, try to calm her down. When they see Jay’s hair being pulled by an invisible force, Paul tries to shoot it, but since he can’t see the ghost, he shoots randomly and accidentally hits Allie. Luckily, the bullet only grazes Allie’s leg. In the chaos, Jay hits her head and falls unconscious.

After the dust settles, all of Jay’s friends agree that she is cursed. Greg remains adamant and refuses to believe in the ghost. In the hospital, Jay asks Greg to have sex with her, and he agrees. Afterward, Jay feels relieved, thinking she’s free from the curse.

For the next five days, Greg sees no ghost and is certain Jay has been bluffing. However, one day, he is killed by a naked woman.  Jay watches in horror as the naked woman kills Greg and realizes that she is now the next target because the curse has likely been returned to her.

Is Jay Dead or Alive?

As the climax approaches, Jay’s friends devise a plan to trap the ghost. They ask Jay to lure the ghost into the pool, where they will electrocute it with electrical equipment. However, when the ghost arrives, it turns the tables by throwing the equipment into the water and tries to kill Jay instead.

Jay’s friends, particularly Yara and Paul, try to save her. Yara manages to cover the ghost’s head with a blanket, making him visible, while Paul shoots a bullet through its head. Despite this, the ghost isn’t destroyed until Paul delivers a fatal shot when the ghost is in the pool and finally kills it.

With the ghost defeated, Jay and Paul enter into a relationship, and the movie concludes with them living happily ever after.
