I Cannot Reach You – Episode 8 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Episode 8

Episode 8 of I Cannot Reach You picks up from the previous episode at Ashiya’s home, with Ohara leaning in for a kiss. But then he stops and reprimands himself that Ashiya is sick. Ashiya wakes up after he leaves and is flustered. The next day, Fujino asks Ashiya about his health and then about the confession he received. Fujino directly assumes it to be a girl who confessed.

Will Ashiya confess his feelings to Ohara?

The scene cuts to Ashiya and Ohara sitting on the terrace and eating lunch. Ashiya asks Ohara about his plans on Christmas Eve. When Ohara says he has none, Ashiya suggests they go on a date. Ohara is stunned and thanks him. Ashiya makes a plan to confess on Christmas Eve.

The rest of the days pass by; Ashiya shows progress in tests and he frets over an outfit for the date.

On the Christmas Eve, Ohara sets out to go on the date but Mikoto is concerned that Ashiya might just turn him down. Ohara says he is fine with whatever Ashiya decides. He is satisfied with the fact that Ashiya has decided to take his time to answer.

As Ohara heads out, he says that he will cry if Ashiya says no and Mikoto offers to stay up with him all night if that happens.

On his way to meet Ashiya, Ohara sees two men trouble a woman. He comes to her rescue and she tags along to Ashiya and Ohara’s date. When she asks what the relationship between them is, Ohara says that they are just childhood friends. Ashiya does not look comfortable during the entire time and leaves.

Ohara follows after him but Ashiya stumbles and falls down. He says that perhaps Ohara did not like him at all and breaks down into tears. Ohara tries to console him. He thought that Ashiya might appreciate him helping the girl. Ashiya confesses finally and the two hug with tears of joy falling from their eyes.

Are Ashiya and Ohara dating?

The scene cuts to Ohara’s home where Ashiya takes a bath and freshens up. The two are all flirty and playful with each other. The next scene is Ohara and Ashiya at the school.

They are the first to arrive and both wonder if their seats will be changed in the new semester. Ashiya likes to sit by the window – but also because it is right behind Ohara. Their cosy moment is interrupted when another classmate arrives.

Shortly after, we see that Ashiya is cleaning the shoe stand area. He wonders if him and Ohara are dating now. He is surprised when Ohara approaches him and loses his footing. He sprains his ankle and Ohara carries Ashiya on his back.

How does I Cannot Reach You end?

The whole school looks at them. Ohara bandages Ashiya’s ankle and Ashiya says he might rest for a while. Ohara says he might rest as well since he did not sleep well the previous night. The reason was that he was worried that Ashiya’s feelings might change overnight.

Ashiya musters up the courage and asks Ohara to go out with him and date him. Ohara blushes at the proposal and readily agrees. He proposes to Ashiya. Ashiya sighs in relief and says that he studied hard and did everything to look cool in front of Ohara. Ohara is surprised to hear that and he kisses Ashiya.

Their moment is interrupted by Mr Murasen and Ohara leaves. We hear Ohara’s voiceover that he is glad his feelings reached Ashiya. What once was painful is now joyous because of Ashiya. He knows that all time might not be a walk down the park, but he wants to spend it all with Ashiya.

The Episode Review

What an episode! The angst was getting too much at this point. I am glad Ohara accepted his feelings towards Ashiya and finally confessed after much debate. Ashiya is still unsure about what he is experiencing, so it might take some time for him to adjust, but all in all, I am just happy that the angst is over! The only thing that remains now are the consequences of Ohara’s confession.
