Helldivers 2 Explained: Is there a single-player mode?

Helldivers 2 Game Guide

Welcome to our Helldivers 2 guide! We’ll be honing in to every part of this game, helping you through the missions, collecting achievements and seeing everything there is to see.

In this article, we’ll be looking at the single-player aspect of the game in particular, with emphasis on whether you can actually solo Helldivers 2 or not. Let’s dive in:

Is there a single-player campaign mode?

No, Helldivers 2 does not have a solo campaign mode. There are no story levels, nor are there big cutscenes or on-rails shooter moments like we’ve seen in other popular shooters like Call Of Duty or Killzone. However, that’s not to say the game doesn’t have the option to play alone, something that we’ll explain in more detail below.

Can you play the game solo?

Helldivers 2 doesn’t have a dedicated single-player campaign but it does allow for Solo Deployment on missions. Do note though that the game specifically emphasizes the idea of playing with others and cooperating in missions. For this reason, Helldivers 2 is pretty unbalanced when you play on your own and you’re likely to get killed a fair amount out in the field.

Furthermore, when you deploy an extraction, it can take several minutes for the drop-ship to land in your area and you will be swarmed by enemies when this happens. Obviously if you have comrades with you, this is made a little easier, but it’s definitely something to bear in mind.

Furthermore, Stratagems have cool-downs (which we explain in a separate guide HERE). If you’re on your own, it’s very easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of enemies.

Some planets have difficulty levels and any above level 5 could prove to be too challenging (especially if you’re just starting out). For that reason, it’s recommended to jump in with cooperative play alongside a squad – which only multiplayer can provide.

Will Helldivers 2 get a single-player mode in the future?

There’s no news right now on whether Arrowhead Studios will set up a dedicated single-player mode in the future. However, as mentioned above, the game itself has been designed to be played with friends or randoms online, so it’s extremely unlikely that this will happen.

Co-op is definitely Helldivers’ forte and it’s actually a lot of fun when you get a team of players alongside you to fight out in the field.

That doesn’t mean that solo fans should give up completely though, as Solo Deployment can still be a nice way of unwinding after some hectic multiplayer action!

For now though, you’ll just have to enjoy the game in its live-service format, a format that many developers are starting to push more and more whether we like it or not.
