Furies (2023) Story Recap

Introduction

Furies begins with Bi standing in blood and she gets flashbacks as she fights through a horde of thugs. She then runs to someone who shoots a gun in her direction.

It then cuts back to when Bi was a kid and while everyone called her crazy, her mother said she is special. She is taped by her mother’s customer as a teen. When her mother tries to save her, she is killed. Furious, she kills the man with a burning log and her house burns down. With nothing left, Bi moves to the city selling bread and pickpocketing.

Jacqueline saves Bi

One day, she is caught by a gang of pickpocketers who try to rape her. She is saved by a woman called Jacqueline who takes her in. They have a meal at Sau’s restaurant and the owner cleans her up and fusses over her. She also chides Jacqueline who keeps popping medicine for an old injury.

Jacqueline then takes Bi takes her a red light area to get to her home. There she meets the other girls Jacqueline has taken in – Hong and Thanh. Hong welcomes her but Thanh doesn’t like her as she seems weak. They start teaching her how to fight and Jacqueline reveals that they are vigilantes who target powerful and corrupt men who use and abuse women.

The first mission to take down Big 4

For their first mission, Jacqueline tells them the target is the Big 4 who smuggle, do human trafficking and own a casino. Hai is the leader. Son Lai is his loyal bodyguard. Long is the clever dealer who also has a human side as he feels for the girls. Finally, Teo leads the sex trafficking ring and was the brothel owner where Thanh was sold.

Bi gets close to Sau who brings her a good luck charm. She gradually starts opening up to the other girls as well. As she spots a flower blooming in concrete, Hong says that with sunlight and love, it can live.

As the girls train, Jacqueline tells them it’s time. The first plan of action is to get Michael, Hai’s new smuggler. The girls beat him up and he stops doing business with Hai and leaves which makes the drug lord furious. The Big 4 wonder if it is the gang leader Huong and Hai has her killed.

She was part of Jacqueline’s plans which worries the vigilante as reveals they have to act much sooner. She tells Thanh that it will get dangerous but the girl trusts Jacqueline and is ready to help. They are told that Teo has a new shipment of girls and drugs to sell to A Thoong and they are going to disrupt the deal. While Teo asks Long for backup he declines to help.

Meanwhile, the girls easily infiltrate, burn the warehouse down and kill Teo. Thanh brings a briefcase full of drugs from the warehouse for Jacqueline. As for Bi, she gets flashbacks to the time she killed the man who killed her mother. She gets blinded with rage and when Thanh goes to check on her, she ends up lashing out till Thanh holds her under a shower to calm her down.

Angry, A Thoong takes Hai’s Nancy Market territory and also tells him that he still needs his goods in 3 days or he will storm Hai’s turf who is worried.

The birthday party and death anniversary

Meanwhile, the girls celebrate Hong’s 19th birthday and she says she is happy with them and wishes that they can be a family forever. Bi says she finally knows what’s family but she can’t fully embrace it.

After the party, Sau also shares that it is someone called Hoang’s 5th death anniversary and fondly remembers him growing up with Long. Turns out Long is their informant as he tells Jacqueline about the aftermath of Teo’s death and to be careful. Sau tells her to stop with the revenge as Hoang was her husband so she can live a good life.

Hong brings them drinks and it is later shown she is hooking up with Long. She tells him to run away with her and he says once his debt is paid off he will give her a new life.

As for Bi, she tells Thanh that she liked the killing and she is afraid because she knows it’s not right. She also ends up asking about the briefcase and Thanh says that she trusts Jacqueline. Bi says she stayed because they make her feel like family and Hong joins them with beers.

As the girls party, Jacqueline works on the plan. She takes her pills and puts out cigarettes on her arm. She then reminisces about her kid and husband who were killed by Hai. In a news article, it seems that along with her family, the world thinks that even she is dead. However, someone spills to Son that Jacqueline is alive and is behind the attack.

The failed mission costs Hong her life

Their next plan is to take down Hai himself. He often visits the New Century Club which has a lot of security. Hong and Bi disguise themselves as hookers and hang out with Hai. However, they are flustered when they hear him saying that he killed Jacqueline and asks Long to confirm it as he was the last one to see her body. He then takes the girls with him to a room where they attack but he fends them off and runs away.

Son and his men who are standing guard go after them while Thanh waits for them outside. Just as Long comes in, Son stabs Hong. As she dies she whispers that she loves Long and to choose a life for himself. Suspicious about the delay, Thanh enters and sees the commotion. She rescues Bi and they escape on a bike but she is wounded on the way out.

They are chased by Son’s men who attack them. Son follows them all the way to their hideout and Sau tries to distract him. He, however, finds an extremely worn-out photo which shows Jacqueline, Hoang and their kid along with Sau and Long whose face is faded beyond recognition. Son tells Hai who is furious.

The real motive behind Jacqueline’s plan

Meanwhile, Bi rushes home and confronts Jacqueline as she realises that the older woman never wanted to fight for justice. Jacqueline says she is wrong for not telling them the truth but still killing Hai will save many girls. She asks Thanh to trust her but she points out that Hong who trusted her is dead. Bi notices that the flower that was growing on their wall is dead and recalls Hong saying that she would be her love and light.

As Thanh is dressing the wound, she recalls her conversation with Bi who wanted to leave. She says it’s Hai’s fault Hong is dead and not to blame herself. Bi asks her to pick between her and Jacqueline and when Thanh doesn’t, she leaves. As she is leaving, she sees that Sau has been killed.

She notices one of Hai’s men and tries to go after him but Jacqueline stops her. She says Thanh could be next and kills the two men targetting Bi. She asks her to join them so they can end it once and for all and not live in fear. Bi begrudgingly agrees and comes back with her. As they get ready, Jacqueline stocks up on guns and gives the briefcase to A Thoong in return for his strongest men.

The final fight

The three attack his casino with A Thoong’s men while Hai gives orders from his control room as he watches the fight through the CCTVs. They clear it out but one of the thugs hurt Thanh as he hits her wound. In the confusion, Jacqueline disappears. She tries to find Hai alone but is stabbed in the back.

Hai sends the rest of his men to kill the girls. A Thoong’s men are killed and Bi and Thanh are separated but they kill all the men although Thanh is severely injured. Hai is annoyed and he tells a junkie lying around that he will get a drug supply for life if he kills the girls.

Meanwhile, Long sends Son on a fool’s errand and Hai calls him back for backup. Son confronts Long who says he needs to pay and attacks him till he drops. Meanwhile, the junkie attacks Bi who kills him after much difficulty.

Jacqueline turns on everyone

Long, Bi and Thanh corner Hai while Jacqueline appears and shoots him. Turns out it was Long who pretended to stab her so she could take Hai by surprise. Hai calls Long his blood brother and spits at him for his betrayal. Long reveals that even Hoang was his blood brother but he killed him anyway for his money, power and territory.

Hai doesn’t have any regrets but is shocked when Jacqueline shoots Long. She says it’s because Long didn’t stop Hai from killing her husband. Hai says that it was someone else’s idea, her son was an accident and that he will give Hoang’s territory back to her. She says it’s already hers and kills him. Thanh and Bi are shocked and try to leave but she tells Thanh to kill Bi and go home with her.

Thanh says she knows Jacqueline doesn’t consider her family but since she saved her life it is the last thing she will do for her. She pretends to shoot Bi and tries to kill Jacqueline but Jacqueline is faster and shoots her in the stomach. Thanh tells Bi that they will always be sisters and dies. Furious, Bi attacks Jacqueline and we see that at the beginning of the film, the person trying to shoot her in the face was Jacqueline.

As they fight, Bi shoots her with her own gun in her stomach and the gun is finally empty. A wounded Jacqueline is impressed and smokes a cigarette while an exhausted Bi slumps to the ground. Her cigarette falls hinting that she is dead. The cops surround the place and see that Bi is still alive. She is arrested and freed 15 years later.
