Evil Dead Rise (2023) Ending Explained – Do Kassie and Beth both survive?

Evil Dead Rise Plot Summary

Evil Dead Rise is a 2023 reboot of the Evil Dead movie franchise. The new instalment starts with three friends on a trip, with one of them being sick. We quickly find out she is actually being possessed, as she presents an unsettling behavior. She tortures and kills her friends one by one.

The rest of the story follows what happens before that, allowing us to see how the parasitic demon reaches the “sick” girl. After an earthquake, three siblings find the Necronomicon, the Book of the Dead. When they bring it home, one of the spirits possesses their mother, Ellie.

The three siblings, Kassie, Danny, and Bridget, and their aunt, Beth, find themselves stuck with a cruel and violent version of the person they love the most. They need to find a way to stop her and survive through the night.

How is the monster stopped?

Throughout the movie, Ellie kills and infects all of her neighbors. Danny and Bridget end up in a similar situation, being possessed after getting hurt. That only leaves Kassie, the youngest sibling, and Beth alive.

As they escape through the elevator, the demons rip Ellie’s body and fuse, creating “the Marauder,” a far scarier creature. Beth and Kassie open the apartment’s gate and leave, but the monster catches the kid and brings her back. Beth stops it from killing Kassie. However, she ends up being the one in danger.

Afterward, the Marauder drags Beth to a wood chipper and turns it on to kill her. Despite being scared, Kassie runs to shut it off, giving her Aunt a chance to get free. She grabs the iconic chainsaw and slams it inside the creature. In order to kill it, Kassie turns the machine on again while Beth pushes the monster inside.

When it is undeniably dead, Kassie and Beth leave together, still carrying the weapon.

How does Evil Dead Rise end?

Later, Jessica, the “sick” girl, arrives at the garage and sees the unbelievable amount of blood. However, her shock leaves her open for the parasitic demon to possess her. With this in mind, we go back to the start of the movie to see its real ending. The creature infects Jessica to escape the building, kills her friends, and is free to terrorize even more people.

Does Evil Dead Rise set up a sequel?

As we mentioned before, the monster survives to see another day. It has killed new people, meaning it can resurrect another two bodies to its army and is free to murder many more.

Consequently, it leaves open a window to another story. It can follow Kassie and Beth, who still has her chainsaw, fearing more monsters might appear, finding out the whole world is in danger now. There’s also a chance it’ll follow completely different protagonists dealing with another situation featuring the parasitic demon.

Evil Dead has a lot of space to grow as a franchise and discuss many different subjects. This instalment gives us a newer and creepier Necronomicon, with new monsters, like the Marauder, who can serve as future antagonists. The sequel can also further explore the book itself, be it the way to destroy it or even its creation.
