Drawing Closer (2024)

Adapted from Ao Morita’s best-selling 2023 manga titled Yomei Ichinen to Senkoku Sareta Boku ga, Yomei Hantoshi no Kimi to Deatta Hanashi – translated as The story of how I, who was told I only had one year to live, met you, who only had half a year – we can expect a tear-jerker. The buzz on social media agrees and even Netflix recommends getting your tissues ready. Having drawn readers as a self-published story, it continued to claim hearts once picked up by Poplar Publishing, selling over 450,000 copies.

What is Drawing Closer about?

Akito Hayasaka is a talented artist, once striving for success and now with a terminal illness – when he receives a heart tumor diagnosis with one year to live, he gives up. Haruna Sakurai, with only half a year left, rekindles his passion as he keeps his condition secret from her. As his attraction grows, he wonders whether he can or should fall in love with only limited time available.

Yep, they’re not kidding about those tissues.

When will Drawing Closer be released?

With an anticipated runtime of 118 minutes, Drawing Closer will come to Netflix worldwide on June 27th, 2024.

Who is included in the cast of Drawing Closer?

J-pop singer Ren Nagase (Hold my Hand at Twilight, Alice in Wonderful Kitchen, The Last Man: The Blind Profiler) of King & Prince is Akito Hayasaka. Actress and model Natsuki Deguchi plays Haruna Sakurai (Ao Haru Ride S2, Till We Meet Again on the Lily Hill).

Of the project, Nagase says, “From the moment I first read the script, I was totally drawn to the sense of tenderness and fragility. The literal ticking clocks of the characters’ respective illnesses make their nascent feelings for each other all the more precious, and I tried to focus hard on capturing the single-minded devotion Akito has for Haruna.”

Who is the director of Drawing Closer?

Director Takahiro Miki is known for romantic dramas, including Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight and My Undead Yokai Girlfriend

Tomoko Yoshida (Love Like Falling Petals, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas), who adapts the screenplay, has a history of collaborating with Director Miki with movies such as We Were There: Part 1 and My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday.

Composer Seiji Kameda, who’s worked with Director Miki on Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight, produces the soundtrack.
