Death and Other Details – Season 1 Episode 10 Recap & Review

Chilling

Episode 10 begins with Rufus trying to write part of what seems like a new book. He says he thought finding Viktor Sams would bring him peace, but it didn’t. On the ship, the bombs go off but only at one end of the boat. Hilde, a.k.a Viktor Sams a.k.a Kira, tells Imogene that they need to leave. A ferry will be here to evacuate the guests soon. The bombs were only to destroy the server farms. Kira promises to answer Imogene’s questions and offers her a hand.

Imogene gets away from the ship on a lifeboat with Kira and her men. Sometime later, Imogene is on a plane. She’s sitting across from Kira, who says she was forced to leave Imogene. After she met Alexandra at the diner, the Colliers tried to kill Kira. That’s when Kira found the man who hosted the auction on the boat — Andreas. He told her she couldn’t take Imogene along if she wanted to disappear. So they staged the blown-up car and Kira pulled out three teeth for proof of her death.

Imogene realises her memory of that day was wrong as she never saw her mother turn the engine on. She was long gone before the car exploded. Kira says she needed Imogene to see it to believe it. As time went on and corruption and power prevailed, Kira changed her face and identity and got to work as Viktor Sams. She worked against the billionaire class. Now, she asks Imogene to join her. They step outside a plane and see a warehouse with all of Kira’s team working there.

Back on the ship, a ferry indeed saves everyone on the ship. Rufus sees everyone on shore and worries about Imogene. Eleanor approaches Anna, who says she never wants to see her again. Sunil and Teddy sadly watch their ship go under the surface.

Imogene tells Kira she understands what she’s doing but she’s hurt innocent people like Danny. Instead, Imogene tells Kira to give it all up and be with her. Six months later, Imogene and Kira go skiing in the snowy mountains. But when they go to a restaurant, Kira gets on a phone call that proves she’s still working as Sams. A narration from Rufus says she hadn’t given up anything for Imogene.

Meanwhile, Leila is all set to leave since Anna has signed the divorce papers. Anna is taking drugs and still hallucinates her mother’s body. Lawrence is living with Anna and Trip since they’ve lost pretty much everything. Teddy is working in a restaurant. One of her previous staff members tells her that Winnie will call when she’s ready.

Kira joins Imogene at the table and the latter reveals that she knows Kira is still working. A surprise twist has Rufus suddenly joining them at the table. Rufus explains the final secret — why Kira left Lawrence alive. He says that Kira poisoned Lawrence when he switched his protein shake. She made sure he clicked on the right advertisement and went from a green shake to a blue one. In fact, Captionem Blue. His dementia is just a symptom of the protein shake.

Imogene reveals that while she and Kira were talking on the ship, the rest of her group shifted the servers. Which means they have proof of Kira’s crimes. Rufus and Imogene tell Kira they’re going to expose the truth. Leila gets up from a nearby table and reveals that Kira’s warehouse is being raided as they speak. Teddy and Jules get up from a table as well and reveal the gun Kira had hidden has no bullets. Plainclothes officers get up and arrest Kira.

Later, Teddy hands Imogene a phone on which Sunil gives her a call. He has an ankle bracelet on and says his trial is coming up. But he promises to find Imogene when he’s out of prison. Imogene looks at Jules and puts the phone down. Afterwards, Jules and Imogene go skiing and she kisses him.

Leila tells Imogene that Anna’s drug use has been really bad. She confesses she hasn’t filed the divorce papers. Currently, Anna’s with a girl who brings Andreas inside the house. Anna says she’ll only speak to Kira but Andreas tells Anna she has no control here.

A flashback shows Anna confronting her mother about Kira’s death on the ship. She blames her mother and father for all the deaths and Imogene’s fate as well. In a fit of anger, Anna picks up a metal stand and hits Katherine on the head. She falls into the pool and dies. Kira (Hilde back then) sees this and offers to protect Anna, as long as she follows her orders. At present, Anna asks Andreas what Kira wants her to do.

In the mountains, after everything, Imogene, Leila, Jules, and Teddy follow a trail of blood. They end up finding severed legs (wearing ski boots) in the trees. Is this a new case for them to work on?

The Episode Review

After the finesse of the previous episode, the season finale unfortunately settles back into mediocrity. This ending is rushed and most of the explanations come across as convenient contrivances rather than a solution to a puzzle. There’s also an odd lack of any emotion on Imogene’s part, who finally found her mother after 18 years of mourning her loss and then immediately decided to work against her. With absolutely no explanation for the change in sentiment, we are meant to believe that she not only sent her mother to jail but spent six months lying and plotting in order to do so.

Without the setting of the ship, the story loses the thread that was holding it together. The six-month time jump, the randomness of the location, the hurried tying up of loose ends — it all makes for a dissatisfying finale. The oddly placed narration from Rufus doesn’t have any significance either and he gets barely any screen time for being a lead character of the show. This show wanted to be both, a smart, compact whodunit as well as an expansive crime drama. In the end, it failed to be both.
