Creepshow – Season 4 Episode 5 Recap & Review

Something Borrowed, Something Blue

In Creepshow Season 4 Episode 5, Frank, close to death, invites his daughter Alison and her fiancé Ryan to his home. Alison is reluctant to meet Frank due to her dysfunctional upbringing and has not talked to her father in 15 years, since the death of her mother.

However, Ryan talks Alison into meeting her father not only as a way to meet him but also as a way to repair their relationship. Upon meeting Frank,  Alison is instantly put off by her father’s attitude when she refuses to get married at his house.

While Alison waits in the car, Frank asks Ryan a few questions and leads him into the basement of his mansion. He explains that living under the house is a prehistoric creature that has to be fed one live human being every 15 years or it will come out of its pit to feed on anyone and everything.

Frank tells Ryan that he is passing on the task to him, and the reason why he wants them to have a wedding at his house is so that he can meet the deadline for feeding the creature. Ryan is horrified by the prospect, but Frank is able to persuade Ryan to take on this gruelling task by promising that if he does it and takes on the responsibility, he will leave his entire fortune to Ryan and Alison.

After thinking it over, Ryan manages to persuade Alison to have their wedding on the date chosen by Frank at his home. The wedding goes off without a hitch, and the time comes for Ryan to choose someone to throw into the pit. He chooses his cousin Darryl.

Drugging Darryl, Ryan takes him into the basement and props him up on the edge of the pit. However, Ryan has a change of heart, just as Darryl, in his drugged state, topples over and into the pit. Having completed the job that he was asked to do, Ryan returns to Frank, and they share a drink. However, Frank starts to feel woozy and passes out, only to wake up tied to a chair in a different location with Ryan standing in front of him. It is revealed that Ryan’s family also has a version of the creature in their own pit, and Alison knew from the very beginning.

Alison and Ryan gleefully push Frank into the pit, feeding their monster, and return to Frank’s home. For a final twist, Darryl runs outside of the house to greet them. In a shocking turn of events, Darryl managed to not only survive the creature he was fed to, but climb out of the hole, which means that that creature was not fed. The segment ends with Ryan and Allison horrified, running from the house as the creature jumps out at them.

The Episode Review

This segment was alright. Creepshow has a history of rich fathers being bastards to their children and their children taking revenge on them. Sometimes it’s the other way around, but in “Something Borrowed,” it’s the manipulative father getting his comeuppance.

The acting was pretty good in this one and the twist was hilarious. It was definitely a twist that you would not see coming. “Something Borrowed” definitely has the feel of a Creepshow segment. There is always something otherworldly hiding beneath the surface and bad people doing bad things or corrupting a good person to do something bad.

 An enjoyable watch for sure.

Doodles

Angela is an aspiring cartoonist waiting for an appointment with a prestigious cartoonist magazine called Timeless. While waiting, she’s approached by an established cartoonist called Sonia, who gives her advice on her portfolio. When it’s Angela’s turn to go into the office of the Editor-in-Chief Roger, she is met by her high school friend Calvin, who is the managing editor of Timeless magazine.

As Roger looks through Angela’s portfolio, he’s left unimpressed by her work, showing her a drawing that Sonia presented him during her meeting. It is revealed that Sonia stole one of Angela’s ideas from her portfolio. Upset, she goes home and doodles on Sonia’s face, drawing rats eating out her eyes.

The next day, Angela wakes to texts from Calvin asking her to return to the office. When questioned about Sonia, it is revealed that she died on her way home and rats were seen eating out her eyes.

While initially shocked by the news, Angela makes her appointment with Roger. This time he offers her a publishing contract, but only if she fires Calvin, which she refuses to do. So, Roger tears up the contract, telling her that she’s not fit to work at Timeless magazine. Angered by this, Angela goes for a drink at the bar in the building. She angrily doodles Roger’s head exploding. Moments later, Roger plummets to the ground head first, and his head explodes on impact.

Horrified after realising what she’s done, Angela goes home and packs her things, throwing away her drawing supplies, and the next day hurries to Timeless to tell Calvin that she’s leaving. But Calvin has been promoted to editor-in-chief in the wake of Roger’s death, and he offers her a full-time publishing gig. After hearing about Roger, Angela feigns ignorance about his death and lies to Calvin, stating she didn’t know about his death. After she leaves, a bartender approaches him and gives him Angela’s bag and doodle that she left behind after rushing out the day before.  Calvin realises that Angela was there when he died.

He goes to Angela’s apartment to confront her. Scared, Angela grabs her yearbook and doodles a bottle going into Calvin’s neck. It kills Calvin instantly. Once she opens the door and sees her handiwork she looks down at the yearbook only to find that she had drawn through the picture and had imprinted the doodle on her own picture.

The segment ends with Angela pulling a bottle from her own throat and falling to the ground, dead.

The Episode Review

This was another fun segment. And had one of the best kill moments on screen. We actually had a visceral reaction when it happened. The Creepshow feel is back, but also has that classic comeuppance storyline that we’re always so familiar with in these types of anthology series. We could definitely see this being something that would have played out on Tales from the Crypt back in the day.

That Creepshow aesthetic is still strong in this one. It did a very good job with its gore, its twists and surprises, as well as its story, which made “Doodles” one of the best segments of season 4. It’s definitely well worth the watch.
