Beyond Paradise is the successful spin-off from the BBC’s hugely successful Death in Paradise series, and season 2 takes it a notch up from the first season, as all the main characters have been established and get the chance to shine, alongside the very watchable Kris Marshall. There isn’t as much murder as opposed to Death in Paradise, and it really works to establish the Devon set show as its own thing. Season 2 focuses on multiple cases in some episodes, and the mysteries often close with a happy ending.

There’s also some brilliant subplots that get a chance to shine, giving the show a more serialised aspect that counteracts the episodic nature of the crime cases. The second half of the six-episode season is stronger than the first half, with the finale being the best of the lot. The creators do a good job of creating high stakes, and there are some thoroughly entertaining yarns.

A big problem with Death in Paradise is the setting, which caused a string of actors to leave the series after not being willing to commit to the overseas filming locations. Beyond Paradise doesn’t have that problem, and for that reason, it is easier to invest in the ensemble cast, knowing that it’s very much here to stay. And the locations in Southern England are just as stunning as their overseas counterparts.

Beyond Paradise isn’t scared to break with the format, and it does this on multiple occasions with satisfying results. There is a mixture of light and dark moments, with the lack of murder actually making this show stronger than its sister show. Season 3 is officially happening, and based on season 2, there are plenty of entertaining stories still left to be told.
