Alert: Missing Persons Unit – Season 2 Episode 3 “Gemma & Isabel” Recap & Review

Gemma & Isabel

Episode 3 of Alert Missing Persons Unit starts at a doctor’s office where a pregnant woman, Gemma, and the woman who will adopt her baby, Charlotte, are at a check-up appointment.

The doctor tells them that although the baby is fine, there is a health risk since her cord is wrapped around her neck, and they have to do an emergency C-section the following day. Gemma gets a suspicious text, which Charlotte notices, and she later disappears when Charlotte is talking to the doctor. We see Gemma hurriedly heading to a car in the parking lot. She looks distressed before getting into the car.

Meanwhile, Jason brings Wayne breakfast at the motel where she is under house arrest, and they start talking about the bombing case. Jason says he is expecting to get a file from the homicide team, and they hear a message chime on Jason’s phone, thinking it might be the file, but it happens to be the wedding invitations to Mike and Nikki’s wedding.

At the officers’, Kemi and Nikki excitedly talk about the wedding, and she asks Kemi to officiate. Kemi mentions that she is dating someone and might bring a plus one to the wedding, but the new case cuts their chat short as Nikki leaves, assuring Kemi that they will reevaluate so she can tell her about her date.

Charlotte and her husband, David, are in the conference room, and they report that Gemma is missing. While Charlotte is convinced that Gemma might have been taken due to the suspicious text received, David thinks that she might have changed her mind and decided to keep the baby. Nikki calls the team for a meeting, and they have different views on the case.

Mike thinks David might be correct, and Gemma decides not to give up the baby for adoption. However, after getting the clearance from Braun, her superior, to issue a missing person’s alert, the team gets a lead from a diner where Gemma sent a sos code to the servers when she tried to order an angel shot. However, the person abducting her takes her away before they can help.

The team gets a lead on the biological father, Marvin, but he has an alibi. Nikki thinks they might be back to square one, but Kemi believes they might have a workaround for figuring out who Gemma texted when Jason walks in with Wayne.

Although she is wary of Wayne assisting because Braun is on her because Jason is asking for the homicide file, Wayne promises not to do anything overboard, and she agrees. Wayne easily gets into Gemma’s phone and finds out that Gemma received money from the adoptive father, David.

Therefore, Jason and Mike visit him, but they learn he paid her because she could not change her mind. He is worried about his wife since the first time they tried adoption. It did not end well, and Charlotte nearly died of heartbreak.

While discussing in David’s office, he gets a ransom text from someone asking for a hundred thousand dollars. Nikki has another discussion with Charlotte and David about the ransom and tries to get them to understand the risks since they might pay the amount, and Gemma might still change her mind and not give up the baby for adoption. Charlotte is convinced that Gemma will not change her mind, but even if she does, Charlotte insists on saving her.

At the office, Jason runs into Braun and warns him about sticking to his lane and not going rogue, as he might hurt Nikki’s career. He also mentions Wayne’s involvement in their cases. Meanwhile, Wayne finds out that Gemma has paid Marvin a lot of money, and they bring him in to question him. He confesses that Gemma paid him to lie on the adoption papers and sign that he is the father. Gemma is afraid of the birth father since he is violent, and Marvin thinks it might be one of the boxers.

Mike and Jason return to the boxing ring and flush out the real baby daddy, Dante. After Jason instigates him, he ends up accidentally punching Mike, which is a federal offence, and they use that to get him to talk. However, he insists that he did not know that Gemma was pregnant, but he figured it out after he saw the alert. Dante insists that he did not take Gemma and that the detectives did not find anything incriminating after they searched his house.

The MPU decide to try to get their abductor at the money drop off, so they gather around and make a solid plan. Elsewhere, we see Dante meet up with the boxing club owner, who trains him, and they hassle him for making him lose a lot of money.

Apparently, Dante was supposed to lose in a fixed match but ended up beating the opponent to a coma. Therefore, he needs to pay back the money lost and risk losing his career and possibly his life. That is when he came up with the plan to kidnap Gemma and get the money from the adoptive parents.

The sting operation is all set, but Dante tricks them, snatches the money and tries to run. However, Jason quickly figures out his plan and runs after him. Mike and Jason almost corner him, but he holds Charlotte hostage with a knife to her throat, making the detectives stand down. However, when he lets her go, a police officer shoots him and dies before they can figure out Gemma’s location.

Suddenly, Charlotte receives a notification from the fetal monitor that Gemma is in labour. Kemi and Wayne succeed in figuring out her location using surveillance footage from Dante’s car. Jason and Mike rush to the location, and Gemma is in labour and cannot move.

Luckily, Charlotte arrives soon after with the doctor, and they send out Mike and Jason as they work to deliver the baby. A few moments later, Charlotte walks out and asks her husband to join her in the house. Gemma is holding Isabel in her arms, and she hands her over to Charlotte.

Next, Mike plays the piano at home when Nikki joins her with two glasses of wine. They talk about potentially starting a cycle of their own and having kids, but Nikki says she is unsure. They should first focus on the wedding and handle everything else as it comes.

At the end of the episode, Jason drops Wayne back to her motel room and outs the ankle monitor. Wayne asks about the bombing case, and he says that he will let it go since he does not want Nikki to be in trouble, but Wayne knows he does not mean it.

Jason hands Wayne her phone, and she hacks into the police database and retrieves the file, but opening it initiates a virus. Jason concludes that since Braun warned him about looking into the case, he might have added the extra safety to make sure that Jason does not see anything he is not supposed to see.

The Episode Review

The tension in this episode is palpable as MPU rushes to save Gemma before she loses the baby. For a brief moment, we were worried they wouldn’t make it, but thankfully, they found her just in time. It was heartbreaking to see the couple struggle to have a baby of their own. At least MPU helped them become the family they always wanted.

On the other hand, Braun’s warning to Jason seemed a bit off. It felt like he was using Nikki’s career as a threat against Jason. What is the big deal if Jason wants to look into the bombing? It might help solve the case quicker, so why is Braun going out of his way to ensure Jason never gets any information about the case? We are also curious to see if there is more to Jason and Wayne’s relationship. For friends, they do seem a bit flirty at times!
