Zombieverse – Episode 8 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

The Final Night

Episode 8 of Zombieverse starts this finale with all our survivors gathered on the Ferris wheel. They need to wait for the boat to arrive so they’ll be saved. However, the operator gets bitten and they’re all stuck on the big wheel with no way to get out. Even worse though, Na-rae and Kkwachu are about to succumb to the zombie virus after being half-zombies for the past 47 hours.

There’s 2 hours and 24 hours remaining until the boat gets to the dock. They need to hold on but things look bleak, especially as Na-rae decides that he’s had enough of the others. She contemplates whether to just open the doors and let them all be bitten, especially as she’s about to turn. The fate of the survivors rests in her hands.

Each of the survivors try to convince them via radio, but Hong-chul getting nostalgic is enough to prompt the others to start sniggering down the radio. After all, Hong-chul has only ever looked out for himself this entire time! The half-zombies have the power to open and close different cabins from their position, but when Na-rae and Kkwachu fall asleep, there’s a hidden ace up their sleeve. The cabin that Tsuki and DinDin are in was never locked by the operators, allowing them to get out and switch around the places with the others.

Who makes it off the Ferris Wheel alive?

While they’re alone, a moment of vulnerability washes over them all as they discuss what they want to do going forward. They’re worried about Hee-kwan, who’s still suffering from motion sickness from the pirate ship ride he was led onto during episode 7. If you’ll remember Na-rae and Kkwachu assumingly led them all on via vuvuzelas and let them ride constantly. Dex though is more worried about losing his muscle mass!

Na-rae eventually re-awakens but she hasn’t been turned just yet. However, her vision is all blurry and she’s struggling to see. It all comes down to the final game. Na-rae and kkwachu have to decide which survivors should go free and who else should be turned alongside them.

Dex shows himself to the survivors and points ou that he’s right in front of the pair as his cabin rolls round. Given how selfless he’s been this entire time, they seemingly believe his honesty. As for the others, they all hide but Tsuki sells Hong-chul out, confirming he’s in car number 9! With less than 5 minutes to go, the pair make their decision and stop the Ferris wheel roulette. But at what number? Number 9 of course, meaning Hong-chul is a gonner!

Who survives the night?

Na-rae locks herself in the cabin with Hong-chul, who can’t stop laughing as he realizes the end is nigh. But what about the others? Well, Patricia, Si-young, Tsuki, DinDin and Dex are all good to leave. However, Hong-chul has died, along with Na-rae and Kkwachu. There’s only five that manage to make it to the very end.

The survivors race down to the coast, where the boat is waiting for them. And ironically, it’s called Harmony. The group use a makeshift floatation device to make it over to the boat. When it gets down to it, Si-young stays behind on shore to let Patricia go first. Patricia makes such a commotion trying to get on, struggling to hoist up her weight. In fact, she’s so loud that it awakens the captain, who shows up and cuts the rope.

That leaves Patricia, Si-young and Dex stranded. Dex refuses to go out without a fight, and despite it being (apparently) -13 degrees in the water, he uses his strength to push the floatie back to shore with the others. The survivors are now split between two different areas.

How does Zombieverse end?

Tsuki and DinDin decide to stick together and keep their mouth shut on the boat, especially if they don’t want to be thrown off! As for our trio of survivors, the gates to the dock break and they’re all left alone to face the zombie horde that’s incoming. But wait, there’s someone arriving! Who is it?

A bus races in and stops beside them. The three scramble onboard and realize that actually, they weren’t waiting for a boat after all. It turns out these were coordinates for the bus! After all of that, Tsuki and DinDin aren’t on the rescue boat after all! This lovely little twist sees the pair forced to put on lifejackets as they realize they’re on the wrong boat. As for the trio of survivors, their not stranded after all as the bus proceeds forward, straight into the water. It actually doubles up as a boat. How about that!

Is there an epilogue?

So out of everyone, we have 5 survivors, spread across two different locations. There’s a slight epilogue here showing a zombie Hong-chul prancing about one year later, but we’re essentially led to believe the zombie outbreak is still prevalent and our survivors may not be out the woods quite yet!

The Episode Review

So Zombieverse bows out with an ending that pretty much wraps everything up while also leaving an ambiguous teaser in case a second season is greenlit. On the whole though this series feels more like a one-and-done deal, with a tone that’s whiplashed from horror and suspense over to outright comedy and slapstick. The trouble is, when your contestants don’t take this stuff seriously, why should the audience?

Whether intentional or not, the show’s premise has basically faltered because of this, and all the different quests and ideas in here aren’t implemented all that well as a result.

Having said that, the comradery between the different contestants, not to mention the jokes themselves have been pretty funny. When the comedy has hit, it really has been an excellent addition. However, there are also times where it’s missed as well, like when Hong-chul and Patricia were trying to escape from the cabin back in episode 5.

It’s certainly not bad, but it hasn’t been a particularly great watch either which is a bit of a shame. Still, the final episode did throw one more twist our way at the end which is at least something!
