Disney’s Zombies franchise is hugely popular, especially among those tweens and younger children who can’t get enough of the silly antics and musical numbers of the monstrous students at Seabrook High.
To date, there are three movies in the Zombies franchise and a collection of animated 4-minute shorts. These are on top of this new animated series that continues the adventures of Zed, Addison, Bucky, et al, with cast members from the live-action films returning to voice their characters.
If your kids are a fan of the movies, they’ll probably enjoy this series too. It’s bright and silly, with a bunch of over-the-top scenarios that aren’t particularly memorable but which provide occasional chuckles nevertheless. If your kids aren’t a fan of the franchise, then they should probably steer clear. There are better-animated shows out there, both in terms of animation quality and storytelling, so their time may be better spent with those (assuming they haven’t been turned into zombies themselves because of a YouTube/TicToc fixation).
Of course, I’m assuming you have come to this review on behalf of your children. ZOMBIES- The Re-Animated Series isn’t geared towards adults, even those who do like the movies, as it contains very few jokes that are aimed at older teens and grown-ups. That being said, I appreciate we all have different tastes, so while I didn’t get a lot from the series, there’s a chance you might have more room for it in your heart than I did, especially if you’re familiar with the characters.
In terms of story, the series follows the Seabrook crew as they get a fresh opportunity to re-do their senior year thanks to A-Spen’s alien technology. There’s not much of an overarching narrative – there’s no Groundhog Day level of learning here! Instead, we have a series of self-contained shorts that feature the titular zombies (and werewolves, witches, and aliens) having the same goofy set of misadventures that they’re known for.
In one episode, chaos unfolds when Zed creates a miracle soda that turns his addicted classmates into the undead. In another episode, Bucky invents a new vending machine, much to the dismay of Eliza who doesn’t want to replace the older machine just because it’s broken. Later episodes include skits about supernatural pet-sitting, feuds between werewolves and sasquatches, and a zombie dog that Bucky uses to improve his following online.
As silly as these episodes are, they do contain meaningful messages related to self-acceptance, friendship, helping others belong, and caring for the environment. These messages aren’t too on the nose, so your kids won’t feel as if they’re being lectured to. But if you’re sitting with them, you might be able to raise some valuable points about life and positive living after each episode ends.
ZOMBIES – The Re-Animated Series is available to watch on Disney+ right now. It’s a competent if unremarkable series that might satisfy the cravings of those wanting more of their favourite SeaBrook High characters. The stories and songs are mostly forgettable, but with its meaningful messaging, it has more to offer than a TicToc craze or a YouTube unboxing video.
