Women in Blue – Episode 2 “Paola” Recap & Review

Paola

In this recap for Women in Blue episode 2 starts with Paola’s sister opening the restaurant they work at in the morning. The boss is angry since Paola is running late but the sister is concerned as this is unlike Paola. Later, she tries to file a missing report with the police, but the detective in charge dismisses her concern. To be fair, Paola has not been missing long enough to raise suspicions, but the cop is still being insensitive. Sadly, Paola is killed and dumped at a local park.

In the meantime, the women are done with their training and report for work at the station. Maria worries if she is doing the right thing as her son starts acting up. He is used to having his mom around and is having a hard time adjusting. However, Aldo encourages Maria to hang in there and she promises to be home by 7 pm. As for Gabina, her dad refuses to look or speak to her.

Escobedo and Romandia welcome the women to the station and brief them before dividing them into groups of four. As expected, Maria, Valentino, Gabina and Angeles are teamed together. They are asked to work at the park, but a problem arises when they realise they won’t be given guns.

Romandia lies that there has been a delay, but Valentina still raises a storm. Gabina and Maria try to get her to calm down. The women are also facing issues with the other male cops who think they shouldn’t be there. The men keep making sexist remarks and mocking Romandia.

On the other hand, the President gets into a heated argument with Escobedo over the headlines. The media is heavily reporting on the Undresser and calling the President and the police out. Even though the police are working overtime to catch the serial killer, there has been no progress.

To solve this, Escobedo asks Gabina to do a magazine shoot with her dad but she turns him down. She worries that the move will annoy her Commandeer dad further. However, Escobedo goes over her head and still asks her dad to show up.

After a disappointing start to the first day, the women try to remain positive and focus on their work. Valentina calls her ex, who is a reporter, and vents about the police not giving them firearms. She finds it outrageous that they were only given a coin purse to call the police in case they spot trouble and a whistle.

They were also not given any patrol car and had to take a train. The other ladies try to get Valentina to calm down.

A young boy looking for his lost dog in the park interrupts the women’s discussion. The women offer to help and that is when Maria comes across Paola’s body.

They call the police and one of Gabina’s brothers, Gerardo, takes over the crime scene. He is offended that Valentina covered the body with her jacket and warns her never to contaminate the crime scene again. Seeing the dead body triggers Maria and Valentina as they remember their late sister, Natalia, who died while they were young.

While writing their statement, Angeles and Valentina get into a heated fight over religion. Valentina is pissed that Angeles thinks Paola’s soul is in heaven and everything happens according to God’s plan.

After securing the crime scene, Gerardo asks the women to head back to the station and give their statement. After learning of the new victim, the detective realises that the woman is Paola. He starts feeling guilty for ignoring her sister’s worry.

The police use the fingerprint found on Paola’s body and a footprint at the scene to finally arrest a suspect. The man in question turns out to be one of the workers from the park. However, he is a mental retard and can barely talk. He has a sexual harassment record from his teenage days and the police are confident they have their guy. They force the man, Tito, into giving a coerced confession and Maria is horrified to witness the police beat Tito into confessing.

After her shift, Gabina shows up for the photo shoot and is surprised to see her dad. The commander plays it cool, but it is evident he is angry. After the shoot wraps up, he slaps Gabina for putting him in this position and kicks her out of the house.

Meanwhile, Maria is abruptly tasked with informing Paola’s sister about her passing. Maria is shocked that the police haven’t notified Jessica yet. She helps Jessica identify Paola’s body and drops her home.

Even though she is running late, Maria feels empathy for Jessica and asks her for more information on Paola. The police never even cared to get Jessica’s statement. Jessica tells Maria about the Cadillac but gets offended when Maria questions if Paola had the habit of getting into a stranger’s car.

Later, Romandia informs Maria that Tito confessed. Maria tries to bring up the coerced confession, but Romandia warns her to drop it. He advises her to also learn to keep the case away from her family.

In the meantime, Valentina’s ex drops by her house. He tells her that he did some investigation and that Romandia lied about the weapon’s delay. Valentina tries to flirt with him, but he turns her down again.

After a long day, Maria gets home to find Aldo called her mom to help. He is worried that Maria will be missing family events and disappointing the kids. He asks her to be cautious about balancing work and family. She starts cooking dinner and avoids telling Aldo much about her first day.

She subtly asks him questions about the car Jesica said she saw Paola get in. She gets a call from Romandia, scolding her for interrogating Jessica. He informs her that Tito committed suicide in prison. The scene cuts to Gerardo giving a press brief, announcing the arrest and death of the infamous Undresser.

On the other hand, Angeles questions if she should continue being a police. Her grandma talks her out of it and encourages her to be patient with Valentina.

The episode ends with Maria looking into the case by herself. She starts by finding all the information the media has written about the Undresser.

The Episode Review

Shockingly, the senior police officer never bothered to treat Jessica with any respect. He messed up and then forced Maria to clean up after him. He didn’t even bother to apologise or at least properly investigate the case.

Instead, they conveniently used Tito as a scapegoat and moved on like nothing happened. These officers have no sense of duty or human decency. No wonder the public is bashing them. You would think that they would want to close the case on the right note given how big it is.

If they are messing up on such a case, who knows how many other innocent people they have arrested to inflate their egos? The Undresser killed those women, but the police killed Tito.

It is good Maria is looking into the case. For a rookie, she has more drive and common sense. She is not driven by her ego but by the desire to find the truth.  I also like that Valentina is outspoken and fierce. She is a force to be reckoned with. She fights for her beliefs and asks the hard question.

Although she needs to take a chill pill once in a while; she is the perfect person to stand alongside Maria. We also have Gabina, she might seem meek, but she has an inner courage that shines through at the right time.

She knows the politics of the office and uses this to help the women navigate the minefield well. Lastly, Angeles is smart and compassionate. She has a way of doing things but still stands by her beliefs and is always willing to help.
