I’m a Guest Here
Episode 1 of Will Trent Season 3 starts with Ormewood and his cop friends having fun with their families at a family barbecue. Two of the cops leave for an ice run but end up getting shot on the streets. Unfortunately, one of them, Chester, is fatally wounded and dies. The other one is rushed to the hospital.
Following the murder of an off-duty cop, Amanda and the mayor hold a press conference to assure the public that they are looking into the case. She announces that Faith will head the investigation. Faith announces that the attack was targeted, and the mayor enforces a curfew. Behind the scenes, the mayor and Amanda get into it. Captain Cromwell’s heavy investment in this case doesn’t help, as Chester was his close friend.
Based on the evidence, the assassins were lying in wait for Chester. The police think that a local gang is behind the attack. Witnesses link the attack to the group based on what the assassins were wearing. Faith and Amanda want to investigate the evidence fully, but Cromwell and the mayor want to bring the gang leader, Raphael, into custody immediately. Unfortunately, Faith is outdone, since Cromwell already sent cars to Raphael’s house.
By the time Faith gets there, the police and Raphael are at an impasse. Raphael refuses to surrender or leave his house. When Faith makes contact through a call, he demands to speak only to Will Trent. Faith tries to explain that Trent has been gone for months and no one knows where he is. However, Raphael insists on only Will Trent.
Speaking of Trent, he is leading a quiet life in Tennessee with his beloved dog, Betty. He is working as a private detective, mostly catching cheating spouses. However, his idyllic, quiet life is cut short by Amanda’s impromptu visit. She has been secretly stalking him and was giving him space until two cops ended up shot in the streets and the main suspect insists on talking to Trent only.
She demands that he return home, but he refuses. He is wrecked by the guilt of arresting Angie and can’t forgive himself. Amanda suggests he call Angie and talk about the situation instead of wallowing in guilt. After hearing that Raphael specifically asked for him, Trent reluctantly agrees to help with the case.
Meanwhile, Angie is settling in at her new job as a security guard in one of the high-end neighbourhoods. Franklin drops by to notify her that Trent is back to work on the case. She claims she is good and has no plans to run into Trent.
In the meantime, Trent arrives on the scene and insists on getting inside with no gun or protective gear. It turns out he and Raphael used to be close, but fell apart. The moment Raphael sees him, they start fighting until Raphael’s grandma interrupts their little bloody reunion. Trent and Raphael talk about the case, and Raphael insists he is being framed. Trent believes him and promises to look into it. Raphael saved Trent in the past and feels he is owed.
Faith is happy to see Trent, but angry that he left without any goodbyes. She has taken over his office, and though her new partner is lacking, she is too proud to admit she missed Trent. Since she is in charge of the case, and Trent is only a guest, she puts him in charge of following up on the impartial number plates.
Meanwhile, Faith checks in with a confidential informant. His response leads Faith to believe that Raphael was not lying about being framed. On the other hand, Ormewood stumbles upon Faith’s CI’s side hustle of stealing cars.
Following a lead from Faith’s new partner. Trent finds the stolen car used in the shoot-out. Later, at the station, Chester’s wife confronts Ormewood. She is angry after learning her husband was supporting another woman’s kid. She believes that Ormewood knew, but he didn’t. However, he promises to look into it. Later, he visits Angie and tries to convince her to talk to Trent since he is in bad shape.
After a long day, Trent returns to his house, but Niko is too angry to welcome him back. Being in the house triggers a lot of Angie’s memories for Trent.
The next day, Trent learns that Chester was supposed to meet someone that day at a local restaurant. He shows up, half expecting no one to show up, but someone does. It turns out that Chester was to meet with a female lawyer from the District Attorney’s office. Alba didn’t know who she was meeting, only that it was a cop looking to get something off his chest and discuss immunity options. After realising that she was supposed to meet with Chester who was killed, she tries to leave.
Trent opens up and tells her that he is not one of the corrupt cops. He starts ranting off about how he even arrested the love of his life. This gains Alba’s attention, and she trusts him. Based on what they have found out, the police start to suspect that Chester was corrupt and working with the local gang, trying to frame Raphael. As he talks to Alba, the reporters announce that Raphael has surrendered and confessed.
Trent visits Raphael and asks him why he didn’t wait. Raphael refuses to explain but still asks for Trent’s help. The mayor announces the surrender, and everyone considers the case closed. However, Trent, Amanda, Faith, and Ormewood continue investigating the case. Ormewood learns that Chester donated a lot of money to one of the victims in a case he worked on. The man died, but Chester continued to look after his family.
Trent and Faith visit Raphael’s house to get more clues. They find his laptop and realise that someone kidnapped Raphael’s daughter to get him to surrender and confess.
The Episode Review
It is no surprise that Trent feels guilty about what happened with Angie. To be fair, he was backed into a corner and had to do it. However, he hurt a few people by just leaving without a goodbye. I think Trent fails to realise that over the past few years; he has made real friends. People who genuinely care for him and want to help. He had a tough upbringing in the foster care system, but he now has a village behind him.
As for Angie, she has made great progress. Hopefully, she will maintain it throughout the season. As much as Trent and Angie deserve to air out their difference, I still think they should end their toxic romantic relationship completely. One of the exciting things we have this season is the arrival of Alba played by Gina Rodriguez. It will be interesting to see how she will change the dynamics of the show. Could she possibly be Trent’s new love interest?
