Will Trent – Season 2 Episode 3 “You Don’t Have to Understand” Recap & Review

You Don’t Have to Understand

Episode 3 of Will Trent Season 2 starts with a woman touching up her make-up and getting out of her car to meet someone in an abandoned building. She cautiously walks up the stairs asking why the other person picked this building. She reaches for one of the doors and tries to open it. Before she realises what is happening, someone walks behind her and pulls a bag over her head.

Meanwhile, Angie passes her physical test and is finally ready to return to the field. Trent shows up at the training centre to congratulate and take care of her. He knows she is in pain and wants to help.

Angie feels Trent is avoiding work and questions him about it. She thinks Trent should talk to someone about the explosion and Cricket’s death. She volunteers to be that person, but Trent gets a call before they finish their conversation. Angie offers to drop Betty at Trent’s house while he goes to the crime scene.

At the crime scene, he meets Amanda, who thinks Faith is running late and has a few things to say. She is unhappy that Faith has been late to work and is the first to leave throughout the week. They are welcomed by a detective who leads them to the abandoned building. We were expecting to see the woman’s body from the opening scene, but instead, we see a male body. He looks like the man who attacked the woman. We also see that Faith was on-site long before Amanda and Trent got there.

Upon carefully examining the body, Trent deduces that the blood doesn’t belong to the victim. Given his wound, it is unlikely he bled out too much. Trent follows the blood trail and finds another male body. It looks like the man was shot by a gun. Secondly, they spot a purse and, based on the content of the purse, they believe the woman was pregnant. A theory starts to shape up that the woman was attacked by the first man and saved by the second guy.

Trent thinks the woman was the original target. The second victim interrupted to protect the lady. Sadly, he is shot three times. The woman finally manages to use the loose door knob on her assailant and kills him by plunging it into his back. She tried to help the second victim escape, but he died before they managed to get out of the building. Now the question remains: where is this pregnant woman? Is she safe? Why didn’t she call the police?

While Trent is sleuthing in the building, Amand is called outside to meet Councilman Victor Carrey. He is worried that the murder will delay his redevelopment plans for the city. He wants the case wrapped up quickly and quietly.

Later, Trent, Amanda, and Faith return to GBI and successfully identify all the victims and perpetrators in their cases.

The woman is Isabella, 22 years old and a New Beginnings Community of Faith member. The second victim is Conrad, an associate youth pastor at the same church Isabella attended. Based on their interview findings, no one knows the father of Isabella’s child. Trent believes someone lured Isabella to the building to kill her, and their first suspect is the mysterious baby daddy.

They bring in Conrad’s parents and head pastor, Reggie, at the New Beginnings Community of Faith. Trent is suspicious of the pastor since he mistrusts religion. However, Reggie claims he is a good guy, and everyone in his church is too. However, Reggie doesn’t help the police identify the baby daddy. He doesn’t know who it is, either.

Trent visits the church and continues interviewing the people around, asking if they have seen Isabella. Trent takes a break to learn Spanish but is distracted by memories of Cricket. Reggie notices this and talks to Trent about how trauma shapes who we are and how to move forward from it.

Reggie says that he and Trent used their past and trauma to do something meaningful because they grew up feeling worthless. He thinks trauma makes people focus on making the world better for others to distract from their pain. It is a spot-on reading since it is poignant and raw.

Meanwhile, Faith searches Isabella’s house but finds no interesting leads. She, however, discovers that Isabella used to work at Councilman Victor Carrey’s campaign the previous summer. Carrey, his wife, and his assistant explain that they didn’t keep in touch with Isabella but are praying for her. The three willingly cooperate with the investigation but Carrey seems shocked, even worried.

While Faith looks into the Councilman, Trent focuses on Reggie and comes across a big secret. Turns out Reggie is not the good pastor’s real name. His real name is Leonard Parker, and he is wanted in Philadelphia for being involved in a violent robbery that left one innocent bystander dead. Reggie has been on the run for 20 years.

Trent brings in Reggie and asks him to explain why his prints were on the knife found at the crime scene. He explains that Conrad took the knife for protection and finally reveals that he knows where Isabella is. He is protecting her since she is terrified.

According to Isabella, she went to the building to meet with her baby daddy, but instead, she nearly died. She is wary of coming forward since she doubts the police will believe her and her baby daddy might get custody of the kid. Faith convinces Reggie to give them Isabella’s location, but she is gone by the time they show up. It looks like someone got to her first.

They put an alert out for Isabella and quickly checked who else knew about the safe house. Their search leads to the councilman. They visit Carrey’s house and hear gunshots. They meet  Carrey running out of the house, asking for help. Carrey doesn’t get to say much before his wife puts a bullet to his head.

Faith rushes in to deal with the wife, while Trent helps Isabella, who is fully in labour. He is moved beyond tears when he helps her deliver the baby. On the other side of the house, Faith arrests Carrey’s wife. The woman confesses that she lost it after her husband betrayed her and got Isabella pregnant. She claims she ruined his chances of being a governor, something she had worked so hard for him to attain.

On the other hand, Angie and Ormewood are back on the grind as partners. Ormewood and other officers went out of their way to welcome Angie back with a small but cute celebration. However, the Chief is quick to have them solve a case.

The case is about Ted, who died from a cardiac arrest while in a sauna. The coroner found an exceedingly high level of buprenorphine, a fast-acting pain med that can stop the heart if someone overdoses. The coroner is sure someone poisoned Ted at the Spa, Rubi Dreams Wellness Centre.

Before they can leave, the coroner nearly gets his pretty face punched by Ormewoood when he offers him a divorce lawyer card. Ormewood is in denial that his marriage is falling apart. He thinks if he puts in the work, like helping around the house and with the kids, everything will work out.

First, they interview Ted’s brother, Denny, who says Ted was self-absorbed and is unsure who might have been holding a grudge against him. Next, Ormewwod and Angie visit Rubi Dreams Wellness Centre. They meet Wolfgang, who was supposedly Ted’s ex-business partner. Things went awry when Ted suddenly withdrew from investing in the Sauna franchise they had discussed.

Wolfgang is all zen about the whole issue and says he didn’t kill Ted over it. He agrees to let the police test his oils to prove he didn’t poison Ted. They also find a melted plastic stone in the sauna and believe Wolfgang is destroying evidence. They bring him downtown for further questioning.

Instead of answering their question, Wolfgang tries to help Angie with her pain. He denies being mad at Ted and says he understood why he pulled out. Ted’s father was dying from cancer, and Ted’s priorities changed.

After hearing this, the detectives find the last piece of the puzzle and visit Denny at the hospice. He admits he killed Ted because he refused to help out when their parents got sick but wanted to get his share of the will. Ormewood and Angie allow him a chance to say goodbye before arresting him. Ormewood suggests they get a drink, but Angie reminds him she is sober and he should get home.

After getting Isabella and her baby to safety, Trent calls someone to pick up Reggie and promises to put a word for him. Reggie says he is ready to make peace with his demons and hopes the same for Trent. At the end of the day, he shares with Amanda how magical and cathartic it felt to help Isabella deliver her baby. The episode ends with them silently sitting in his office.

The Episode Review

Trent has been battling a lot of trauma on his own, even though there are so many people who wish to help him. It is evident that Cricket’s death, learning about his mom’s story and dealing with James has been overwhelming. There is also the childhood trauma he faced as a foster kid. All these are enough to make anyone lose their mind, but Trent is strong.

Others might argue that he thinks he has everything under control, but it is only a matter of time before he blows up. If he tries to talk to Amanda more, maybe she can help him before it is too late. It is good to see them find comfort even in their silence.

We also have Ormewood, who is in denial about his failing marriage. Why did he wait this long to become a good husband? He took his relationship for granted and never thought she would leave him. Now that she has one foot out the door, he is making time to be there! Let us see if his antics will convince her.

However, one can’t help but wonder how long this good husband phase will last for Ormewood! It is good that Angie is back, but will she be able to keep up since she is in so much pain?
