Stephen Griffiths is an English serial killer who murdered 3 women in Bradford, England, in 2009 and 2010.
Griffith’s victims were Susan Rushworth who disappeared on the 22nd of June 2009, followed by Shelley Armitage on the 26th of April 2010 and Suzanne Blamires on the 21st of May of the same year. All 3 women were sex workers who were based in Bradford.
Griffiths was a postgraduate student in criminology and was obsessed with the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, and wanted to replicate his crimes, some of which also took place in the city of Bradford.
What happened during the investigation?
Stephen Griffiths was arrested on suspicion of the murders, and in May 2010 he appeared in the magistrates’ court, and gave his name as the Crossbow Cannibal, which led to the media referring to him by this moniker.
The murder trial commenced on the 16th of November 2010 and ended on the 21st of December 2010. Griffiths was convicted of all 3 murders after pleading guilty at Leeds Crown Court.
Griffiths was sentenced to life imprisonment with a whole life order, meaning he will never be eligible for parole and will spend the rest of his life in prison. Griffiths has attempted suicide on several occasions. In 2011, he went on a 120-day hunger strike and avoided contact with others.
Where is Stephen Griffiths now?
Griffiths is serving his life sentence at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire.
In 2019, Griffiths was attacked by another prisoner and rushed to hospital with large puncture wounds in his chest from a sharpened piece of wood but he survived the attack.
