Where is Rudy Guiliani now? The rise and fall of the man who brought down the Mafia

Who is Rudy Guiliani and what is he known for?

Rudy Guiliani is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 107th Mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001. He previously served as the United States Associate Attorney General from 1981 to 1983 and the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1983 to 1989.

He was instrumental in bringing the Mafia down with his use of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) in a federal prosecution. However, in recent years he’s been embroiled in legal troubles of his own due to his involvement with Donald Trump.

In June 2021, Giuliani had his licence to practice law suspended in the state of New York, pending an investigation related to his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

What happened in the Mafia commission trial?

The Mafia commission trial ran from February, 1985 to November 1986, and it saw Guiliani indict 11 organised crime figures, including the heads of New York’s “Five Families” under the RICO act. The charges included extortion, racketeering and murder. 3 bosses in the Five Families were sentenced to 100 years in prison on January 13, 1987.

It was widely believed that the Five Families voted during a commission meeting on whether to issue a contract on Guiliani’s life, but heads of the Lucchese, Bonanno and Genovese families vetoed the idea. Prosecutors were always considered off-bounds in the American mafia. Mobsters had a begrudging respect for law enforcement, as they were just doing their jobs. however, Guiliani had put a significant dent in their business, making them consider the possibility.

What happened when Guiliani was Mayor of New York?

Guiliani was considered to be one of the best Mayors New York had ever seen and was lauded was contributing to reducing the crime rate in the city during his tenure. During the September 11th terrorist attacks, he received praise for his reaction and defiance in the face of adversity.
