Where is Pawel Relowicz now? | The Murder of Libby Squire

Pawel Relowicz

What did Pawel Relowicz do?

Pawel Relowicz is a Polish murderer who killed university student Libby Squire on the 31st of January 2019 in Hull, England. It was supposed to be a night of partying in the northern city of Hull before Libby Squire and her friends started their new term of studies at University.

It was a bitterly cold night in January, Libby had too much to drink and her friends put her in a taxi back home after she was declined entry into a club. Unfortunately, Libby didn’t enter her home and instead went walking on her own in the early hours of the morning. She was seen on CCTV being approached by a man who abducted, raped and murdered her, dumping her body in the river Hull.

Libby’s family and friends began to panic when she hadn’t returned home and a large-scale investigation began, with door-to-door inquiries and searches of the local area taking place.

On the 6th of February, a 24-year-old man called Pawel Relowicz was arrested on suspicion of Libby’s abduction after CCTV showed his car in the area around the time Libby went missing. 4 days later, Relowicz was charged with unrelated sexual and burglary offences so the police could keep him behind bars while they searched for more concrete evidence linking him to Libby Squire’s murder. However, without a body, this was proving to be very difficult.

The agony for Libby’s family and friends continued for over another month, with Libby still not being located and Relowicz refusing to admit to his involvement in her disappearance. However, on the 20th of March, 7 weeks after Libby Squire went missing, her body was discovered by fishermen in the Humber Estuary, close to Grimsby docks. It was devastating for everyone connected with Libby, but at least they finally had some answers.

What happened at Relowicz’s trial?

On the 31st October 2019, Pawel Relowicz was charged with rape and murder at Kingston upon Hull Crown Court. He was remanded in custody, and the trial was set for June 2020 at Sheffield Crown Court. However, there were some delays, and it eventually began on the 12th of January 2021. The trial lasted just over 4 weeks.

On the 11th of February, after 6 days of deliberation, the jury found Relowicz guilty of raping and murdering Libby Squire. The next day, Relowicz was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 27 years.

Where is Pawel Relowicz now?

Pawel Relowicz is 28 years old now and is in prison where he belongs. He had initially agreed to meet with Libby’s mother, Lisa, after being left upset by her portraying him as a bad person in the media. Lisa is desperate to know the details of her daughter’s last moments, but Relowicz has now gone back on his promise to meet with her. He has now said he’ll only meet with her if they don’t talk about Libby, and he demanded a list of her questions beforehand.

Libby, Are You Home Yet? was a 3-part true crime documentary series on Sky Crime that told the story of Libby Squire’s murder, and featured interviews with Libby’s friends and family and the police officers who worked tirelessly on the case.
