What did Michel Fourniret do?
Michel Fourniret was a French serial killer who killed 12 people in France and Belgium between 1987 and 2003.
Fourniret was originally in prison for sexually assaulting 5 young girls in 1984. During his stint in prison, he began corresponding with a woman called Monique Olivier. In letters to her, he was upfront about his fantasies of raping and murdering virginal girls, and she responded that she would “help” him fulfil those fantasies if he agreed to kill her husband. However, he never committed this murder, but after his release from prison in 1987, they began a relationship. Not long after, he went on to rape and murder several young girls, with Olivier acting as his accomplice.
What happened after his arrest?
Fourniret was arrested in June 2003 for the attempted kidnapping of a teenage girl. In 2004, he confessed to killing 9 people, and Olivier turned on him and became an informant. Fourniret was convicted of 7 murders on the 28th of May 2008, and he was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. Olivier was given life with a minimum term of 28 years for being complicit in the murders.
In February 2018, Fourniret confessed to murdering 2 more women. On the 16th of November 2018, Fourniret and Olivier were convicted of murdering a woman called Farida Hammiche. Fourniret was given a second life sentence. In March 2020, Fourniret confessed to killing Estelle Mouzin, who had disappeared in 2003.
Where is Michel Fourniret now?
Michel Fourniret died due to respiratory problems on the 10th of May 2021. He was 79 years old.
In November 2023, Monique Oliver went on trial for 3 murders, including Joanna Parrish and Estelle Mouzin. She was found guilty of the murders in December 2023. She has now been handed a second life sentence, with a minimum prison term of 20 years.
Netflix released a documentary about the case in 2023. It was titled Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil.
