What did Jordan McSweeney do? 

On the 26th of June 2022, Jordan McSweeney sexually assaulted and murdered Zara Aleena as she was walking home in Ilford, London. 

It was around 2 am that Aleena left a bar on Ilford High Street and began walking home on her own. Around the same time, McSweeney had been thrown out of a bar for harassing staff. He approached several other women before spotting Aleena and violently attacking her. She was discovered on a driveway, struggling to breathe, and was later taken to the Royal London Hospital where she died of her brutal injuries.


What happened in the aftermath of the murder? 

The murder of Zara Aleena happened 9 days after McSweeney had been released from prison on licence after committing a robbery. There was an attempt to recall him to prison 2 days before the murder, and many suggested he shouldn’t have been released in the first place. Shockingly, McSweeney had been convicted 28 times for 69 earlier offences. McSweeney was also known for having a history of violence and abuse.


Where is Jordan McSweeney now?  

McSweeney pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum 38-year sentence. However, on the 3rd of November 2023, an appeal decided it should be reduced to a minimum term of 33 years. McSweeney would now be eligible for parole in October 2053.

McSweeney is serving his life sentence in HMP Belmarsh and recently caused controversy when it was discovered he had sex with a prison worker.
